Code Red takes first place

California Futbol Club Code Red won four consecutive weekend matches

and in the process, captured first place in its division at the

Orange Coast United Soccer Tournament.

Code Red shut out all four of their opponents, defeating Laguna

Beach (3-0), Moreno Valley (1-0), the Westside Breakers (1-0) and the

California Stars (2-0).

The efforts of defenders Lauren Hanson, Ashley Haprov, Danica

McGuire, Jodi Hwang, and George Demes allowed keeper Tiffany Van

Tress to record four shutouts.

Mid-fielders Alli Budd, Erica Cabibbo, Osiris Ceja and Rachel

Pasternak, combined with the play of forwards Rebecca Cruz, Alyssa

Strickland and Breanne Justice to form a relentless attack.

In the four victories, Brittany Martinez, Kirsten Marony and

Alison Hensley each recorded two goals apiece, while Erika Longoria

added the seventh goal for the team.

Assists went to Ceja, Marony and Cruz.

Region 55 girls go 2-2

The Hawks, a Region 55 girls’ under-10 All-Star team out of

Huntington Beach, ended a busy of weekend of play by splitting four

matches.

The Hawks began the weekend with a 1-0 victory over a tough Region

143 out of West Huntington Beach. Defensive play on both sides

dominated the match, but a scoreless tie was ended in the third

period when Kirsti Stangeland passed the ball to Katie Gainous, whose

left-footed kick found the net.

Keeper Ashton McKeown got the shutout and was aided by the

defensive efforts of Lindsay Archer, Lauren Armona and Dana Rutkin.

Mikylah Morrell, Makenna Neal, Alexandra Norton, Christina Sanchez

and Kayla Wigney also contributed to the win.

The Hawks then lost a close, 1-0 match to Region 117 of Long

Beach. On Sunday, they dropped another 1-0 decision, this one to

Region 5 of Fountain Valley in a match played in foggy conditions.

They capped the weekend with a flurry of goals which resulted in a

5-1 win over Region 1335 of Orange.

Sanchez scored the Hawks’ first goal, off an assist from Wigney in

the second period.

The third period was a scoring bonanza for the Hawks as Morrell

scored twice to up the lead to 3-0, then Stangeland followed a Region

1335 goal, off a penalty kick, with a score at the end of the period

to push her team into a 4-1 advantage heading into the final period.

There, Gainous scored on a lob just shy of mid-field ended the

match scoring.

The Hawks are coached by Eddie Sanchez and assisted by Pat Archer.
