Senior Taylor Young had a game-high 21 points along with 13 rebounds
to lead the Newport Harbor High boys basketball team to a 61-45 Sea
View League victory over visiting Foothill Wednesday.
The Sailors (13-8, 5-1 in league) outscored Foothill, 19-8, in the
first quarter and, 16-6, in the third quarter for their fifth
consecutive victory. Senior Alex Orth added 11 points, while junior
Dennis Heenan had 10 points, including two three-pointers.
Newport hosts league-leading Aliso Niguel Friday at 6 p.m. for a
chance to be tied for first in league.

Sailors sink Irvine
* WATER POLO: The Newport Harbor High girls water polo team won
it’s fourth straight and 24th in 25 games as it defeated host Irvine
15-1 Wednesday in a Sea View League game.
The Sailors scored eight goals in the first quarter en route to a
12-1 halftime lead.
Senior captain Anne Belden registered four goals and two assists
and Kally Lucas scored two goals and four assists for Newport Harbor
(17-1, 3-0 in league).
The Tars play Santa Margarita Friday at 4 p.m. at Saddleback
College.

Sea Kings start fast
* WATER POLO: The Corona del Mar High girls water polo team scored
early and often in order to cruise to an 11-1 Pacific Coast League
victory over visiting Tesoro Wednesday.
Jordan Anae scored 18 seconds into the first quarter followed by a
goal by Katlin Kubas less than a minute later as the Sea Kings scored
seven goals in the opening frame.
Anae was one of three players to score twice in the first quarter
for CdM (12-5, 2-0 in league). Katie Indvik, who scored twice in the
last minute, and Camille Hewko were the other two.
Taylor Harkins also finished with two goals in the game, giving
the Sea Kings a 9-0 advantage at the half and a 10-0 lead after three
quarters.
Tesoro scored with 17 seconds remaining to avoid the shutout.
CdM plays at Villa Park Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Free throws boost Coast
* BASKETBALL: Despite shooting just 29.4% from the field, the
Orange Coast College men’s basketball team found a way to defeat host
Irvine Valley, 50-44, in an Orange Empire Conference contest
Wednesday.
The Pirates (10-10, 2-5 in conference), who won for just the
second time in eight games, hit 20 of 26 free throws compared to 6 of
14 for the Lasers (11-8, 3-4).
Reggie Brown paced Coast with 12 points while Alfonso James added
10 points -- on 8 of 8 from the free-throw line -- and four rebounds.
Matt Davis and Joel Chester each added six points and four rebounds
for the winners.

Wilson’s three wins it
* BASKETBALL: The Estancia high girls basketball team ended a five
game losing streak with a 48-46 Golden West League victory over host
Orange Wednesday.
Senior Nicolle Wilson made a three-pointer from the top of the arc
with five seconds remaining to give the Eagles the victory. Junior Be
Diep scored a season-high 23 points for Estancia (5-15, 2-5 in
league).
The main factor in the win, according to Coach Ernie Wright, was
the defensive intensity the Eagle exuded for four quarters. He
singled out the play of junior Marisela Sandoval and sophomore Yasmin
Arroyo, who held Orange’s two top players to eight combined points in
the fourth quarter.
Estancia plays at Ocean View Monday at 7 p.m.

OCC halts losing streak
* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team
snapped a four-game losing streak beating host Irvine Valley, 49-46,
Wednesday in an Orange Empire Conference contest.
Rhondi Naff had a game-high 14 points and Ruby Viloria had a
game-high three three-pointers for OCC (13-9, 3-4 in conference).
Lauren Stepanski had 11 rebounds and 13 points for the Pirates, who
play host to Saddleback Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Vanessa Dominguez scored 13 points for Irvine Valley (9-11, 3-4 in

* BASKETBALL: Senior Katie Puishys had a game-high 23 points while

host Oxford Academy Wednesday in Academy League play.
The Lightning (9-7, 5-1 in league) got off to a slow start,
jumping out to a 9-5 lead in the first quarter, but outscored Oxford,
47-16, in the next three quarters.

Titans fend off CdM
* BASKETBALL: Junior Ryan Lance had a career-high 25 points --
including four three-pointers -- but the Corona del Mar High boys
basketball team couldn’t get a defensive stop when it needed it and
lost to host Tesoro, 59-52, in a Pacific Coast League game Wednesday.
The Sea Kings (3-3, 8-13 in league) cut Tesoro’s lead to one point
five on five separate occasions in the third quarter, but couldn’t
stop the Titans’ offense on the ensuing possessions.
CdM hit seven three pointers -- Brett Hirata had two and Adam
Smith had one, along with Lance’s four. The Sea Kings host University
Friday at 7 p.m.

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team couldn’t
get a rebound in the final seconds and lost to visiting Westminster,
34-33, in a Golden West League contest Wednesday.
Both teams entered with 3-3 league records and were battling for a
chance to be tied for fourth in league, but Mesa was 14 of 56 (25%)
from the field as Westminster gained the upper hand.
Junior Judie Akansel tied a game-high 10 points for the Mustangs
(7-14, 3-4 in league), while senior Bethany Vergara added nine
points, five steals and four rebounds.
Costa Mesa visits Santa Ana Friday at 7 p.m.

Titans tip Sea Kings
* SOCCER: The host Tesoro High boys soccer team scored one goal in
the 36th minute and held on to defeat Corona del Mar, 1-0, in a
Pacific Coast League game Wednesday, dropping the Sea Kings out of
first place in league.
Tesoro climbed to the top league spot with a 4-0-1 league record, while the Sea Kings (9-5-2, 4-1 in league) dropped to second.
Corona del Mar had five or six key opportunities to score in the
second half, but couldn’t get the ball on target, said Sea Kings’
Coach Pat Callaghan.
The Sea Kings host University Friday at 3:15 p.m.
Tars lose lead
* SOCCER: The Newport Harbor High boys soccer team jumped out to
an early 2-0 lead but succumbed in the end to visiting Foothill, 3-2,
Wednesday in a Sea View League game.
Senior Kevin Shearer scored in the 15th minute for the Sailors
(2-9-2, 1-4-1 in league) and Sean Woods added a second goal in the
25th minute for a 2-0 Newport lead.
But Foothill scored just before the close of the half and fired in
two more goals in the second half for the win.
The Sailors host Aliso Niguel Friday at 5 p.m.
