Theriot adds
Newport Harbor High senior tailback Trevor Theriot has been named CIF
Southern Section Division VI Co-Offensive Player of the Year with
Orange Lutheran’s Pat Roxas.
Theriot rushed for 1,328 yards and seven touchdowns on 222 carries
to lead the Sailors to a 12-1-1 record and runner-up in Division VI.
Joining Theriot on the All-CIF Division VI team are teammates
Spencer Link, Kasey Peters, Steve Joslin, Alex Orth, Thomas Martin
and Saami Khalifian.
Link led Newport Harbor with 677 receiving yards. He scored six
touchdowns on 48 receptions and added another six points on a 63-yard
punt return against Corona del Mar.
Peters completed 156 of 274 pass attempts (57%) for 2,140 yards
and 23 touchdowns.
Joslin was the anchor along the offensive line at left tackle.
Peters was sacked 13 times on 287 pass plays and the Sailors racked
up 2,688 rushing yards and 25 rushing TDs.
Orth was a top performer in the playoffs at receiver but was named
All-CIF for his play at strong safety. He had 62 tackles, one fumble
recovery and three interceptions for the Sailors. He also had three
blocked punts.
Martin was the starting middle linebacker on a defense that held
opponents to 12.6 points per game and posted three shutouts.
Khalifian led Newport with nine sacks and posted an additional
eight tackles for losses from his defensive end position.
All Newport Harbor honorees are seniors.
Corona del Mar’s Wess Presson, Kevin Welch and Matt Burgner were
selected to the All-CIF Division IX team.
Presson, a senior running back, led the Sea Kings with 1,328
rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on 188 carries. Welch, a senior
receiver, finished with 735 receiving yards and nine TDs on 39
receptions. Burgner, a junior defensive end, finished with 104
tackles and 16 sacks.
