Parking on peninsula should be part of the general plan

Regarding the Pilot’s Wednesday story, “Peninsula parking solution

would cost city plenty,” providing sufficient parking for the

visitors to the Balboa Peninsula is a key issue that must be

addressed and solved in the new Newport Beach general plan.

If the city wants to expand public parking at McFadden Square, it

should include a parking scheme as a part of the new general plan.

This will allow public input and hopefully consensus.

Several beach communities in Southern California have successfully

constructed public parking facilities near their shorelines,

resulting in a win-win situation for locals, tourists, businesses and

cities.

Redondo Beach is a prime example of how sufficient parking leads

to a large and excellent restaurant district at the pier.

Looking forward to new contributors stirring it up

Who needs “Mork and Mindy” when we’ve got “Mark and Wendy”? I find

it amusing that the editors of the Daily Pilot have apparently

decided to pair up Wendy Leece and Mark Gleason on education-related

subjects. I guess they are assuming this coupling will cause some

sparks to fly on educational issues and therefore provoke broader

debate.

They’re probably right. Anyone who has followed Leece’s turbulent

tenure on the Newport-Mesa school board and her term on the Costa

Mesa Parks and Recreation Commission knows that she’s not afraid to

speak her mind on an issue about which she feels passion. I don’t

know much about Gleason, other than the fact that he’s thrown his hat

into the applicant pool for a slot on the Parks and Recreation

Commission, but I’ve enjoyed his presentation of his viewpoints so

far.

Thanks to the editors for this little bit of Tuesday morning

“stimulation.” It’s just one more reason to start my day on the Forum

page.
