Top-ranked Sea Kings prevail

Camille Hewko and Ashley Chandler each scored twice while senior

goalkeeper Brittany Fullen made eight saves in goal to lead Corona

del Mar High’s girls water polo team to its fifth straight victory

following a 6-5 nonleague victory over host Villa Park Friday.

Cari Levine and Katie Indvik (four steals) each added two assists

for the Sea Kings (13-5), ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section

Division II, who never trailed and were held scoreless the final

quarter. Villa Park came in ranked third in CIF Division II.

Anae -- on a Hewko assist -- and Chandler gave CdM a 6-4 lead with

the final two goals of the third quarter, Chandler’s coming with one

second remaining. Anae also drew two ejections and Chandler won all

four sprints.

Eagles roll to victory

* WRESTLING: Estancia High wrestlers registered six pins among

their 11 victories to lead the Eagles to their second Golden West

League dual-meet victory in three days with a 62-12 triumph over host

Ocean View Friday.

Pedro Lopez (112 pounds), Ryan Esfahani (135), Juny Panduro (140),

David Loredo (145), Alex Sotomayor (160) and Chris Guzman (215) all

pinned their opponents while teammate J.C. Kurzen won by technical

fall, 16-0, at 130 pounds. Guzman pinned his opponent in 1:22.

Efren Alvarez (189) won by decision, 9-7, while Gabriel Thaler

(152), Logan Pulizzi (103) and Dominic Durastanti (275) took forfeit

wins for Estancia (8-8, 4-1 in league).

Estancia hosts Saddleback in final league dual meet at 5:30 p.m.

CdM eyeing first

* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team defeated

visiting University, 3-0, Friday in Pacific Coast League action to

set up a first-place showdown versus Tesoro Monday.

Tesoro beat the visiting Sea Kings (10-5-2, 5-1 in league)

Wednesday, 1-0, and climbed into first place. But if CdM wins Monday

at home at 3:15 p.m. it will move into first.

Against University Friday, Nick Ossipoff, Brandon Barrett and Ben

Maggard tallied one goal apiece, while Grant Almquist had two

assists. Sophomore Allan Hardison also had one assist.

Werblin leads Sage

* SOCCER: Senior Amy Werblin registered two goals and an assist to

lead the Sage Hill School girls soccer team to a 5-0 win over

visiting Oxford Academy in an Academy League match.

The Lightning (14-0-1, 4-0-1 in league) took an early lead when

freshman Kellee Kim scored on free kick in the sixth minute. Freshman

Claire Josephson gave Sage Hill a 2-0 halftime advantage when

sophomore Kara Percival on her goal in the 28th minute.

The conditions of the field were dry, even though the match

started with light sprinkles.

The Lightning play host to Capo Valley Christian today at 3:15

p.m.

Coast cruises to win

* BASKETBALL: Rhondi Naff and Lauren Stepanski shared a team-high

18 points in the Orange Coast College women’s basketball team’s 61-46

victory over visiting Saddleback Friday in Orange Empire Conference

action.

Saddleback’s Carly Andrews had a game-high 19 points, but only one

other player scored in double digits for the Gauchos (5-13, 0-8 in

the OEC) -- Nikki Mercado (10).

The Pirates (14-9, 4-4) shot 37.3% from the field and had 15

turnovers to Saddleback’s 23. Crystal McCormick added 10 points and

Stepanski pulled down 11 rebounds for the Pirates.

Manchester wins it

* SOCCER: Senior David Manchester drilled a free kick from

25-yards out in the 75th minute to give the Newport Harbor High boys

soccer team a 1-0 Sea View League victory over visiting Aliso Niguel

Friday.

Junior Carson Hedrick totaled three saves in the goalie position,

while Aliso’s goalie, Matt Land, tallied five saves.

The Sailors improved to 3-8-2, 2-4-1 in league with the win over

Aliso (7-9-3, 1-6) and travel to Irvine Wednesday at 5 p.m. in

another league matchup.

Ball’s Aussie run ends

* TENNIS: Corona del Mar senior Carsten Ball fell to top-seeded

Sun-Young Kim of Taipei, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, the quarterfinals of the

Australian Open junior tournament Friday at Melbourne Park National

Tennis Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Ball defeated Slovakian Pavol

Cervanek, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0, in the round of 16.

UCI sweeps Aggies

* SWIMMING AND DIVING: The UC Irvine men’s and women’s swimming

and diving teams swept the UC Davis Aggies Friday at Davis. The UCI

women won, 179-121, while the ‘Eater men won, 183-117.

The Anteaters got the meet off to a fast start as the women’s 200

medley relay team of Kim Do, Katina Economides, Ashley DePaul and

Chelsea Nagata broke their own school record with a time of 1:45.33.

Chelsea Nagata was victorious in the 100 back (57.31), 50 free

(23.88) and the 100 fly (56.68). Freshman diver Jackie Jones won both

the one-meter (257.57) and the three-meter (273.45) competitions to

help the UCI women claim their seventh dual meet win of the season.

On the men’s side, Mike Cohee led UCI with three wins on the day.

Cohee won the 100 back (51.64), 200 back (1:54.75) and the 500 free

(4:37.25). Junior diver Anton Slobounov won both the one-meter

(280.65) and the three-meter (263.25) competitions for UCI. Sophomore

Dan Simonsen swept the breaststroke events winning the 100 breast

(57.86) and the 200 breast (2:05.21). Freshman Eddie Erazo swept the

butterfly events winning the 100 fly (50.57) and the 200 fly

(1:54.02).

Mesa’s Vergara gets hot

* BASKETBALL: Senior Bethany Vergara nailed five three-pointers on

her way to a game-high 19 points in the Costa Mesa High girls

basketball team’s 49-42 Golden West League victory over host Santa

Ana Friday.

Vergara was two points shy of bettering a career-high performance

she had against El Toro earlier this season. She also hit five

three-pointers against El Toro.

Mesa (8-14, 4-4 in league) opened the game Friday with a 12-0 run

and outscored the Saints, 17-2, in the first quarter. But Venise

Enesi got in foul trouble and didn’t play the second quarter as Santa

Ana cut the deficit to 23-17 by halftime. Mesa maintained its lead in

the second half and held on for the win.

The Mustangs host Saddleback Monday at 7 p.m.

Warriors win in four

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team lost, 30-23,

25-30, 25-30, 26-30, to the University of Hawaii Friday at the Bren

Center in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.

Sophomore outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky led the Anteaters with

17 kills while sophomore setter Brian Thornton dished out a

match-high 56 assists. He also had four service aces for UCI (3-6,

1-3 in the federation).

UCI, ranked No. 11 in the latest coaches poll, had 23 service

errors.

Hawaii, ranked No. 4, was led by senior outside hitter Pedro

Azenha, who had a match-high 21 kills and five service aces.

Sophomore setter Brian Beckwith had 50 assists for the Warriors (5-1,

3-0).

The two teams face each other tonight at Crawford Court at 7 p.m.

Trojans tackle CdM

* BASKETBALL: The University High boys basketball team hit four

three-pointers in the first quarter and outscored host Corona del

Mar, 17-5, in the first on its way to a 59-43 Pacific Coast League

victory Friday.

The Sea Kings (8-14, 3-4 in league) cut the deficit to 10 points

in the fourth quarter but couldn’t pull any closer. Senior Brett

Hirata had a team-high 12 points for CdM, while junior Ryan Lance

added six.

CdM hosts Calvary Chapel Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Oxford surprises Sage

* BASKETBALL: Host Oxford Academy earned its first Academy League

win Friday, topping Sage Hill School, 45-33, at Orangeview Junior

High in Anaheim.

Sage, which defeated Oxford by 15 in the first round of league,

fell to 15-7, 2-4 in league.

Oxford is now 8-12, 1-5.

Freshman Jamie McGee led the Lightning with 10 points.

Matt Davis had a team-high 11 points for the Pirates (11-10, 2-6

in the OEC), while Lance Ortiz chipped in nine points. Dave Seifert

added eight points for OCC.

Saddleback (19-2, 7-1) outrebounded OCC, 46-26, with Chet Johnson

and Justin Allen each grabbing nine boards.

Sage loses on late goal

* SOCCER: Oxford Academy scored a goal with two minutes remaining

to snap the Sage Hill School boys soccer team’s four-game winning

streak with a 3-2 decision Friday at Oxford.

Sophomore Richard Gadbois sent a ball to the left side where

fellow sophomore Tyler Ellis chipped in a beauty of a shot of the

Oxford goalkeeper’s head in the 19th minute to even the score 1-1.

Five minutes later sweeper Alex Edelstein lobbed a free kick to

Zach Milder, who traped the ball in his chest and muscled his way

toward the goal for Sage Hill (4-8-1, 4-2 in league).

Oxford scored near the end of the first half for a 2-2 tie and

again in the waning moments of the match .

Sage Hill plays host to Brethren Christian Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

UCI’s Tom honored

* SWIMMING: UC Irvine freshman Randall Tom, has been named Male

Swimmer of the Week in the Big West Conference for the second time

this season.

Tom broke a 15-year-old UCI record in the 100-yard butterfly

(48.87 seconds) on his way to a pair of individual victories and a

pair of relay victories against UC San Diego Sunday Jan. 23.

He also set a pool record in the 200 butterfly (1:48.97) and

another school record in the 200 medley relay (1:31.55), having blazed to a 22.01 leg in the butterfly. The previous relay record had

stood for 13 years.

Tom also received Swimmer of the Week honors Nov. 10 following the Big West shootout.
