Sailors’ polo team holds off Knights

The Newport Harbor High girls water polo team survived a scare,

beating The Bishop’s of San Diego, 9-8, Saturday in La Jolla in a

nonleague match.

Ashling Taylor registered two steals and an assist to go with her

three goals for Newport Harbor (18-2). Kally Lucas had two goals and

three steals for the Sailors.

Sarah Van Norman scored five goals for The Bishop’s. The Knights

scored four goals in the second quarter to make it a 5-4 Newport edge

at halftime. Each team scored three times in the third and once in

the fourth.

The Sailors return to Sea View League action Tuesday when they

play host to Laguna Hills at 3 p.m.

UCI men, women split

* SWIMMING: The UC Irvine women’s swim team defeated defending Big

West Conference champion Pacific, 110-95, Saturday in Stockton.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Kim Do, Katina Economides,

Ashley DePaul and Chelsea Nagata set a school-record time of 1:45.07,

breaking the time the foursome set Friday against UC Davis. Do also

took first in the 200 backstroke (2:04.03) and Nagat won the 50 free

(23.70).

Do, Economides and Nagata teamed with Mai Tajima to win the 200

freestyle relay (1:38.43).

Alexis Sheridan won the 1,000 freestyle race in a season best time

of 10:15.98 and Lara Bjargardottir, a two-time representative for

Iceland in the Olympics, won the 200 breaststroke (2:16.87).

Bjargardottir was second in the 400 individual medley (4:23.07).

The UCI men lost to the Tigers, 120-85.

Mike Cohee won the 200 free (1:40.92), Randall Tom won the 200

butterfly (1:53.22), Eddie Erazo won the 200 back (1:50.56) and Dan Simonsen won the 200 breaststroke (2:05.66).

Kareem Adnan (9:35.55) and Duke Krautim (9:39.10) finished first

and second in the 1,000 free.

The UCI women improve to 8-3 in dual meets while the men fall to

5-4 on the year. The Anteaters return to action Friday at Cal State

Northridge at 2 p.m. at the Matador Pool.

Sage pours in 11 goals

* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School girls soccer team continued its

impressive showing this season, beating visiting Capo Valley

Christian, 11-0, Saturday in an Academy League match.

Freshman Colleen Heyler scored three goals to lead the Lightning

(15-0-1, 5-0-1 in league). Freshmen Claire Josephson registered two

assists and a goal for Sage, who play at Brethren Christian Tuesday

at 3:15 p.m. Sage beat Brethren 4-0 earlier in the year.

The Lightning had 18 shots on goal, compared to two for Capo

Valley Christian (0-9-0, 0-4-0).

Faulkner lights it up

* BASKETBALL: Lisa Faulkner connected on six three-pointers and

finished with a game-high 31 points to lead the Vanguard University

women’s basketball team to an 84-71 win over host Christian Heritage

Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference showdown.

Rachel Besse was a force inside the paint, registering game highs

with 10 rebounds and six blocked shots for Vanguard (18-2, 9-1 in

conference).

Jamie Geagel had 20 points to lead Christian Heritage (9-11, 2-8).

Vanguard plays at Biola Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Warriors sweep UCI

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team was swept,

30-27, 30-22, 30-25, by fourth-ranked University of Hawaii Saturday

in a Mountain Sports Federation match at Crawford Court.

Hawaii (6-1, 4-0 in the federation) was paced by Pedro Azenha’s

match-high 18 kills and Brian Beckwith’s 40 assists.

Jayson Jablonsky’s 11 kills and Brian Thornton’s 38 assists led

UCI (3-7, 1-4).

The Anteaters, ranked No. 11, play host to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara

Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Crawford Court.

Idaho defeats ‘Eaters

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team surrendered a

three-point halftime lead to fall to host University of Idaho, 68-60,

Saturday in a Big West Conference game.

The Anteaters (2-15, 1-8 in conference) started the game hot,

shooting 56% en route to a 36-33 halftime lead. Idaho used a 12-2 run

in the second half to take the lead.

UCI guard Melisa Jacob scored a career-high 28 points and shot 6

of 11 from behind the three-point line.

Forward Lauren Yadon had 10 points while guard Annie Mai tied a

career-high six assists and grabbed a career-high five rebounds.

Kim’s 21 not enough

* BASKETBALL: The University Vanguard men’s basketball team could

not dig itself out of a first-half hole and lost, 82-75, Saturday at

Christian Heritage Saturday in a Golden State Athletic Conference

game.

The Lions outscored Christian Heritage, 48-47, in the second half,

but it was not enough to overcome a 35-27 first-half deficit.

Brian Kim scored a game-high 21 points for Vanguard. Leon

Rosborough registered 16 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven

assists for Vanguard, which plays at Biola Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
