Mesa clinches title

The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team clinched first place in the

Golden West League following a 6-0 league victory over visiting Ocean

View Tuesday.

The Mustangs (15-2, 10-0 in league) clinched the top spot with two

league games remaining, the next against host Orange Tuesday at 3:15

p.m.

Against Ocean View, junior Jasmin Day scored two goals, both in

the first half, while Nilani Duarte, Sharon Frazier, Alaina Abalos

and Jenny Sparks each added a goal in the second half.

Senior goalie Kindra Bailey had four saves for the Mustangs.

Sage leaps into first

* BASKETBALL: Haywood Wright scored a game-high 16 points while

adding eight steals and six blocks as Sage Hill School exacted

revenge and took sole possession of the Academy League lead following

a 45-19 victory over visiting Brethren Christian Tuesday.

Katie Puishys tallied 12 points and 15 rebounds while Kaitlin Tyre

added three points and four assists for the Lightning (10-7, 6-1 in

league), who have won five in a row. Junior Laura Schaefer added nine

points.

Niki Wakamiya led Brethren (14-8, 5-2), who defeated the

Lightning, 44-36, earlier this season, with five points. Sage

assistant coach Richard Bowen said the Lightning took care of the

ball and hit some key shots to set the tone Tuesday.

Sage faces host St. Margaret’s at 6 p.m. Friday.

UCI to add four into Hall

* HONORS: Four members will be inducted into UC Irvine’s athletic

Hall of Fame Feb. 12 during the homecoming alumni brunch at the Hyatt

Regency Irvine beginning at 10:45 a.m. The new inductees also will be

introduced during the UCI-UC Riverside men’s basketball game that

night at the Bren Events Center.

The 2005 inductees are Jeff Cunningham (men’s basketball), Popi

Edwards (women’s volleyball/track and field), Leticia Oseguera

(women’s basketball) and P.J. Polowski (men’s soccer). This year’s

class joins 56 previous inductees.

Kaplan lifts Eagles

* WATER POLO: Junior Chelsea Kaplan scored from seven meters out

with four seconds left to give the host Estancia High girls water

polo team a 5-4 nonleague, come-from-behind victory over Los Amigos

Tuesday. Carolina Barnes assisted the goal.

Senior Courtney Hess tied the score at 4 early in the fourth

quarter with her game-high third goal on a breakaway for the Eagles

(12-10, 3-1 in the Golden West League).

Freshman Meagan Kunert added one goal while Katie Mahan made 11

saves for the Estancia, which hosts league foe Santa Ana at 3 p.m.

Pirates blast Eagles

* BASEBALL: Sophomore catcher Josh Banda slammed three two-run

home runs in consecutive at-bats to match a school record and lead

the host Orange Coast College baseball team to its second win in as

many games to start the season following a 17-6 nonconference triumph

Tuesday.

The home runs came in three straight innings with Banda, who

finished 3 for 4 with six RBIs, hitting the first pitch he saw in

both the third and fourth frames over the wall in left-center field.

Pirate stater Keith Rizor allowed just one unearned run, struck

out five and walked no one in five innings to win his debut.

The Pirates (2-0) pounded 16 hits, including three each by Robbie

Blauer and Stephen Schneider, while Matt Meadows tallied his first

home run. OCC reached double digits in scoring for a second straight

game to start the season, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since

the 2001 campaign.

Surge boosts CdM

* SOCCER: Juniors Kelly Morgan and Jessica Mazura each tallied hat

tricks in the second half to help the Corona del Mar High girls

soccer team keep pace in the Pacific Coast League race with a 7-2

victory over visiting Calvary Chapel Tuesday.

CdM (11-8-1, 5-2-1 in league) led, 1-0, at halftime following an

unassisted goal by Alex Tobiessen in the 19th minute.

Junior Lindsey Manning tallied two assists while Phoebe Chang and

Mazura each had one assist in the second half. Calvary fell to

6-10-2, 1-7.

The Sea Kings battle host Northwood (5-0-1 in league entering play

Tuesday), in a showdown at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at Meadowood Park.

Kim carries Sage Hill

* SOCCER: Freshman Kelle Kim registered a hat trick to lead the

Sage Hill School girls soccer team to a 4-0 win over host Brethren

Christian in an Academy League match Tuesday.

Kim scored in the eighth, 43rd and 53rd minutes, and Kara Percival

scored in the 57th minute for Sage Hill (16-0-1, 6-0-1 in league)

The loss drops Brethren Christian to 1-13-1 and 1-5.

The Lightning will host St. Margaret’s Friday at 3:15. It will be

a rematch of Sage’s lone blemish this season, a 1-1 tie on the road

to the Tartans.

Mesa handles foe

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team used a

16-point second quarter to help pull away and defeat host Saddleback,

48-30, in a Golden West League contest Tuesday.

The Mustangs (15-8, 8-1 in league) outscored Saddleback, 16-5, in

the second quarter and took a 26-15 halftime lead after being tied,

10-10, at the end of the first quarter.

Junior Brian Molina had a game-high 12 points and sophomore Larry

Puente added eight more against the Roadrunners (10-13, 4-5). Scott

Knox chipped in seven points for the Mustangs.

Sailors break streak

* BASKETBALL: Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team raced to

a 16-4 first-quarter lead and held off host Irvine to snap a

four-game losing streak with a 48-39 Sea View League victory Tuesday.

Senior Vanessa Miller tallied a game-high 17 points to go with

four steals and five assists for Newport (11-13, 2-6 in league),

which committed just four turnovers in the first half.

Newport Coach Jen Thompson said the closest the Vaqueros (3-19,

0-8) came was five points with six minutes left in the fourth

quarter.

Senior Kristi Eddington scored a season-high 16 points while

Brittany Deyan and Ivy Melo (team-high six rebounds) added eight and

six points, respectively, for the Sailors, who face host Laguna Hills

Thursday at 7 p.m. Deyan had four steals.

Shooting boosts Lions

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Kelly Schmidt scored a game-high 22 points

to lead five Vanguard University players in double figures as the

visiting Lions downed Biola, 83-47, in a Golden State Athletic

Conference women’s basketball contest Tuesday.

The Lions (20-2, 11-1 in the GSAC) raced to a 43-15 lead at

halftime as Schmidt scored 13 of her 20 points in that span. Forward

Melissa Cook (16 points), Lacey Mills (11 points), Lisa Faulkner (15

points) and Rachel Besse (10 points) helped Vanguard, ranked No. 1 in

the NAIA, finish 50% from the field (30 of 60) for the contest.

UCI places eighth

* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished strong in the last

two rounds to place eighth of 16 teams in the PING-Arizona

Intercollegiate tournament that concluded Tuesday on the par-71

course at Arizona National Golf Club.

UCI sophomore Brian Edick finished seventh at 3-under 210 as he

shot a 6-under 65 in Tuesday’s final round (78-67-65). Junior Jay

Choe finished 34th at 219 (78-67-74), freshman Kenny Kim was 40th at

220 (78-71-71), freshman Garrett Sapp placed 56th at 223 (73-79-71)

and junior Ryne Rindfleisch finished 76th at 235 (84-74-77).

Sailors tie Irvine

* SOCCER: One game after defeating then CIF Southern Section

Division I second-ranked Aliso Niguel -- now first-ranked -- in the

last two minutes Thursday, the Newport Harbor High girls soccer team

received a last-minute effort to force a 1-1 tie against host Irvine

Tuesday in Sea View League play.

In the 79th minute of regulation, junior Amy Klippert took a cross

from Jackie Taylor and kicked it in to save the loss and force the

tie for the Sailors (8-5-2, 4-2-2 in league).

The game was tied, 0-0, at halftime, but Irvine came out in the

second half and scored within the first five minutes.

Sophomore goalie Mary Giberson had 10 saves for the Sailors, who

visit Laguna Hills Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Brethren downs Sage

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team got off to

another slow start and fell to visiting Brethren Christian, 44-36, in

an Academy League game Tuesday.

Sage (15-8, 2-5 in league) was outscored, 13-7, in the first

quarter and, 10-6, in the third against the Warriors, ranked No. 3 in

CIF Southern Section Division IV-A.

Freshman Jamie McGee hit three straight free-throws to cut the

deficit to, 35-33, with just less than three minutes remaining, but

Brethren scored on the next possession and took over the game.

McGee finished with a game-high 15 points, while senior Matt Loper

added 10 for the Lightning, who visit league-undefeated St.

Margaret’s Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Irvine muscles Sailors

* WRESTLING: The Newport Harbor High wrestling team gave up four

weight classes by forfeit and lost to visiting Irvine, 58-13, Tuesday

in a Sea View League meet.

Junior Eddie Charcas, wrestling in the 119-pound weight class for

the Sailors (3-5, 1-4 in league), won by major decision over Irvine’s

Peter Yang, 13-3, while Victor George (125) pinned his opponent in

three minutes, 30 seconds.

Newport freshman Zane O’Bourke (103) decisioned Dan Schweitzer,

13-7. Senior Kyle Molina (130) lost, 13-6, to Justin Silva, who

previously pinned Molina in the San Clemente tournament last week.

Sea Kings fall short

* BASKETBALL: Katie Schulte poured in a team-high 18 points, but

it was not enough as Corona del Mar High’s girls basketball team fell

to visiting Calvary Chapel, 40-39, in Pacific Coast League play

Tuesday.

Schulte hit a three-pointer in the waning seconds, but CdM Coach

Scott Kahawai’s attempt at calling a timeout failed and the game

ended.

The Sea Kings (11-13, 3-5 in league) jumped to an 11-2 lead on

senior night, but Calvary (10-14, 1-7 in league) answered with a 15-4

run to close the first half and never trailed the final two quarters.

Kristina Wayte added seven points and nine rebounds while Megan

Benbow tallied six points and two steals for the Sea Kings, who

committed 17 turnovers. Chelsea DeLuca paced Calvary with 25 points.

Eagles’ hopes fade

* SOCCER: Tuesday’s 2-1 road loss to Westminster High makes the

Estancia girls soccer team’s chances of making the postseason seem

dim.

Freshman Taylor West scored with five minutes remaining with an

assist credited to freshman Sarah Braunsdorf for Estancia (5-6-4,

1-5-3 in league).

Madison Urtusuastegui made two saves in the first half and Marci

Kirchberg made four in second half for Estancia.

Carla Negrete scored twice in the first half for Westminster

(7-6-2, 4-3-2).

Vanguard drops pair

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team was the victim

of a pair of walk-off hits and dropped both games of a nonconference

doubleheader -- 6-5 and 2-1 -- to open the season against host Cal

State Bakersfield Tuesday.

Trailing, 5-4, in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1, the

Roadrunners’ Ashlea Ward delivered a one-out, two-run triple to

center for the walk-off hit. Down, 1-0, in the second game, senior

Jenny Rios’ two-out RBI double, followed by junior Allison Amezcua’s

RBI single, won it for the Roadrunners (2-0).

Lions lose opener

* BASEBALL: Chris Lusic hit a bases-loaded single off the wall in

right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Cal State

Dominguez Hills baseball team a 7-6 nonconference victory over

visiting Vanguard in the season opener for both teams Tuesday.

The Lions tied it with three runs in the top of the ninth on four

hits and an error. But Vanguard reliever Robert Klein, who took the

loss, walked the bases loaded -- one of them intentional -- in the

bottom of the ninth to set up Lusic’s hit.

Aaron Barret led the Lions with three hits while Mike Grant added

two. Vanguard also rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie it with two runs

in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Matt Voorhies and an RBI single

from Grant.

Biola staves off Lions

* BASKETBALL: Host Biola University’s men’s basketball team held

off a mild second-half rally by Vanguard and posted a 50-44 Golden

State Athletic Conference victory Tuesday.

Terrell Young’s double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds) paced Biola

(21-3, 9-3 in the GSAC), which held Vanguard (8-13, 3-9) to 25%

shooting (6 of 24) in the first half.

Brian Kim led the Lions, who lost their fifth straight, with 16

points and three assists while Brian Roberts added 10 points. Tim

Burnette grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds while chipping in six points

for Vanguard, which defeated Biola, 58-54, in the teams’ prior

meeting this season.
