The girls’ basketball teams at Ocean View and Huntington Beach highs

picked up league victories Monday night, while Huntington’s boys

dropped their league encounter.

In Golden West League play, host Ocean View cruised past Estancia,

54-31, as sophomore center DJ Butler scored 16 points and junior

guard Josnique Thomas added 13 more.

“We played pretty well. It was a good win for us,” Butler said.

Huntington, meanwhile, held off a late charge by Los Alamitos to

post a 51-48 Sunset League road victory. The Oilers, who led by 14 at

the half, got 17 points from Katia Hadj-Hamou and 12 more from

Jasmine Erving.

Hadj-Hamou fouled out early in the fourth quarter, and the

Griffins crept back into contention.

“We played pretty phenomenally in the first half,” said Oilers

coach Russ McClurg, whose squad led by as many as 20 points. “Katia

has a real strong game and Jasmine has been our most consistent

player all season.

“This was just a great team victory.”

Huntington, which was 0-10 in league play a year ago and 5-20

overall, improved to 3-4 in the Sunset League and 16-8 overall.

In its previous league outing, Ocean View lost at Saddleback,

41-37. Butler netted 15 points to lead all Seahawk scorers.

In other girls’ basketball action, Marina downed host Huntington

Beach, 51-44, in Sunset League play. Allison Budzinski scored 13

points and Lindsey Schulze scored 11 to pace the Vikings. Erving

Edison held off rival Fountain Valley to post a 39-33 road

victory. The Kepilino sisters, Rebecca and Wahine, scored 15 and 11

points, respectively.

Huntington stepped out of league play to take on host Loara, and

led by Erving’s 25 points, downed the host Saxons, 56-47. Hadj-Hamou

also scored in double figures with 14 points.

In boys’ basketball, Huntington played Sunset League leader Los

Alamitos tough Monday, but eventually fell to the visiting Griffins,

37-36. Matt Buckalew’s 14 points led the Oilers.

Ocean View hammered visiting Saddleback, 64-36, with Clint Amberry

scoring 15 points and Brad Sweezy getting 12 more in a Golden West

League clash.

In Sunset League action, Marina ran away from visiting Huntington

Beach, 62-40, in one of two rivalry games.

Matt Molino scored 15, Mike Kinoshita scored 12 and Troy Lewis had

11 points for the Vikings. Buckalew scored 17 points and Nick Becker

had 10 for the Oilers.

In another rivalry meeting, Jeff Golden and Tony Ziemann each

scored eight points to lead eight Edison players in the scoring

column during the Chargers’ 46-42 home win over Fountain Valley.

In wrestling, Edison ran its Sunset League dual record to 4-0 by

defeating Los Alamitos, 36-25.

Hirsch (125), Dylan Jensen (130), Brandon Drucker, (135) Nick Abraham

(140), Jimmy Hynes (160), Jake Pinkham(189), Stephon Holmquist (215)

and Romni Fuga (heavyweight).

Edison’s win set up a Wednesday showdown with undefeated

Esperanza for the league duals title.

Chargers who were undefeated in league duals prior to the

Esperanza match were Jensen, Brandon Drucker, Abraham, Hynes, Pinkham

and Fuga.

On Saturday, Edison will host the league individual championships,

beginning at 9:30 a.m.

In boys’ soccer, junior Gray Bailey scored two goals as Huntington

The Oilers and Edison also defeated rivals Fountain Valley and

Marina, respectively, by identical 2-0 scores.

Chargers.

Senior Yuuki Irei and junior Gray Bailey scored goals for the

victorious Oilers.

In girls’ soccer, Edison fought Fountain Valley to a 1-1 tie.
