Anteaters upset Gauchos

UC Irvine’s men’s volleyball team snapped a two-match losing streak

with a 30-14, 30-27, 30-26 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation upset

win over visiting UC Santa Barbara Wednesday at Crawford Court.

Sophomore Jayson Jablonsky led 11th-ranked UCI (4-7, 2-4 in the

MPSF) with 17 kills on 22 attempts while adding six digs. Brian

Thornton had 38 assists while Paul Spittle added eight kills and a

match-high 10 digs for the Anteaters, who scored the final five

points of Game 3 to claim the match over the seventh-ranked Gauchos

(5-5, 5-2).

Matt Webber tallied three kills and two block assists off the

bench to spark UCI.

Theriot in Shrine game

* FOOTBALL: Newport Harbor High football standout Trevor Theriot,

who has narrowed down his college choices to San Jose State, or

walking on at UCLA or USC, was chosen Wednesday to play in the Shrine

game June 23.

The Shrine game, which pits graduated public high school standouts

against private school standouts, is in its second year of this

format after previous years of Northern California versus Southern

California, and California versus Texas. Since the format change in

2003, the game has been played at Mt. San Antonio College.

Theriot is expected to decide on Friday which school he will

choose.

Gonzalez wins it

* SOCCER: Senior Cesar Gonzalez nailed the game-winning shot on a

penalty kick in the 79th minute and the Estancia High boys soccer

team defeated host Westminster, 3-2, in a Golden West League game

Wednesday.

Estancia improved to 6-5-1, 5-3-1 in league and remain in third

place behind Saddleback and Santa Ana.

Junior Pedro Duarte scored the first goal for the Eagles in the

19th minute off an assist from Audi Reyes, while Angel Cirilo scored

the second goal in the 21st minute off an assist from Geo Macias.

Marco Burciagag finished with five saves in goal for Estancia.

Estancia hosts Saddleback Friday at 3 p.m.

CdM beats Tesoro

* SOCCER: One game after tying Tesoro High, 0-0, the Corona del

Mar boys soccer team beat Calvary Chapel, 3-1, Wednesday in Pacific

Coast League action at CdM.

The first goal was not scored until the 37th minute due to windy

conditions. In the 54th minute, CdM’s Ben Maggard scored on an assist

from senior forward Murphy Mcgonagal.

In the 71st minute, Calvary Chapel scored its only goal. The boys

stayed focused and gave their two captains, Shane Collins and Grant

Almquist, rest, allowing younger players more experience. The victory

improved CdM to 11-5-3, 6-1-1 in league.

The Sea Kings visit Northwood Thursday at 3:15. The Timberwolves

upset CdM, 3-1, in the first round.

OCC defeats Dons

* BASKETBALL: Christen D’Alessandro led the short-handed Orange

Coast College women’s basketball team with a game-high 22 points in

an Orange Empire Conference win, 77-56, against host Santa Ana

Wednesday.

The Pirates (15-9, 5-4 in league) shot 58% from the field, with

five of their six players in double figures. OCC’s Valerie Katayama

finished with 11 points and eight assists.

At halftime, Santa Ana (5-13, 1-8 in league) trailed, 33-30. The

Dons kept it close throughout the second half, leading on four

occasions. With 13 minutes remaining in the second half, Lauren

Stepanski hit a jumper, which began OCC’s 21-5 run, putting the game

away.

Kornegay paces Pirates

* VOLLEYBALL: Estancia High product Josh Kornegay pounded a

team-high 11 kills while Uriah Seui added 10 to lead the Orange Coast

College men’s volleyball team to a 30-24, 28-30, 30-19, 30-16

nonconference victory in its season opener over host University of

San Diego’s club team Wednesday.

Drew Ginther amassed 31 assists while Glenn Henry led the Pirates

with 21 digs.

OCC Coach Chuck Cutenese experimented with different lineups and

said he was pleased with the team’s effort from start to finish. The

Bucs host Hope International at 5 p.m. Friday in a nonconference

matchup.

Sea Kings strong again

* WATER POLO: Jordan Anae and Katie Indvik each scored three goals

to help the Corona del Mar High girls water polo team remain

undefeated in the Pacific Coast League following a 10-2 victory over

visiting University Wednesday.

The Sea Kings (14-5, 3-0 in league), ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern

Section Division II, scored the first nine goals before the Trojans

answered with 14 seconds left in the third quarter.

Anae scored the Sea Kings’ first three goals while Chelsea Lyman

added two. Cari Levine and Camille Hewko (three steals, two assists)

each scored once. Taylor Harkins and Indvik each tallied two assists

while senior goalkeeper Brittany Fullen made nine saves.

CdM opens pool play in the Irvine Southern California

championships against Mira Costa at 5 p.m. today in the Sea Kings’

pool.

Sailors cruise to win

* BASKETBALL: The starting five of the Newport Harbor High boys

basketball team played about 2 1/2 quarters and the Sailors cruised

to a 71-29 Sea View League victory over host Irvine Wednesday.

Senior Taylor Young scored a team-high 16 points to accompany 10

rebounds in his limited playing time, and Brett Perrine added 10

points as the Sailors (14-9, 6-2 in league) remained second in league

behind Aliso Niguel.

Irvine’s Abdi Mohammed scored a game-high 20 points, but the

Vaqueros dropped to 1-7 in league following the loss.

Newport plays at Laguna Hills Friday at 7 p.m.

CdM keeps hope alive

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys basketball team

outscored visiting Calvary Chapel, 34-19, in the second and third

quarters to pull away and eventually secured a 57-38 Pacific Coast

League victory Wednesday.

Ted Slaughter tallied a game-high 20 points, including two on a

tip-dunk in the fourth quarter, while teammate Brett Hirata added 10

points for the Sea Kings, (9-14, 4-4 in league), who moved into sole

possession of fourth place with two league games remaining.

CdM’s height eventually wore down the Eagles (8-14, 0-8) and the Sea Kings, who led by as many as 25 in the second half, scored

several points in transition, Coach Ryan Curry said.

CdM faces host Northwood at 7 p.m. Friday and likely needs to win

its final two games to reach the CIF Southern Section Division III-A

playoffs.

Pirates start, end strong

* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College’s men’s basketball team closed

with a 19-11 run to help forge a 77-67 Orange Empire Conference

victory over host Santa Ana Wednesday night.

The Pirates (12-10, 3-6 in the OEC) raced to a 30-8 lead in the

first 13 minutes and then shot 65.4% from the field (17 of 26) in the second half to hold off the Dons (9-11, 5-4).

Reggie Brown scored eight of his game-high 17 points -- six on

three-pointers -- in the opening half while teammate Lance Ortiz also

tallied 17 points, 12 coming in the final 20 minutes.

Ortiz led Coast with five assists while Matt Davis added 13 points

off the bench. Joel Chester scored 11 points while grabbing four

rebounds. Dave Seifert and Craig Williams each had five rebounds to

pace Coast.

Estancia closes strong

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore Alondra Barrera hit a three-pointer with

five seconds remaining in the third quarter to give the Estancia High

girls basketball team the momentum it needed to defeat host

Westminster, 39-32, in Golden West League action Wednesday.

Barrera’s three gave the Eagles (6-16, 3-6 in league) a 23-20 lead

after three quarters of close basketball, and Estancia hit its

necessary free-throws in the fourth quarter to pull away. Estancia

finished shooting 14 of 19 (73.6%) from the line.

Junior Be Diep led Estancia in scoring with a game-high 21 points,

while sophomore Michelle Hallock had four points and eight rebounds.

Estancia hosts Saddleback Friday at 7 p.m.

Mesa outrebounded

* BASKETBALL: The 6-foot-2 presence of Ocean View High’s D.J.

Butler and the 5-11 presence of Erica Congellare led to the Costa

Mesa girls basketball team giving up 14 offensive rebounds and losing

to the visiting Seahawks, 56-47, in a Golden West League game

Wednesday.

Congellare and Butler each had 16 points, while Mesa’ Bethany

Vergara also had 16 points, as all three tied for the game-high.

Vergara also had four steals, Jennifer Courtney had seven rebounds

and four points, and Deanna Sanchez chipped in eight points for the

Mustangs (8-16, 4-6 in league), who are fifth out of seven teams in

league.

Mesa visits Orange Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Bruins blank UCI

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team fell to 1-3 overall in a 7-0 nonconference loss against host UCLA.

UCI duo Aaron Ellis and freshman Victor Lamm came closest to

winning before falling to Mathieu Dehaine and Chris Lamm, 8-6. UCLA

took the doubles point after victories on all three courts.

In singles, UCI lost all six sets. Victor Lamm once again came

closest when losing, 10-6, to No. 39 Alberto Francis after taking him

to a tiebreaker.

The Anteaters return to host the UC Davis Aggies on Saturday at

noon.
