Rapid transit could

be rapid solution

A rapid transit alternative to smog and congestion-causing trucks

and cars needs to be pursued by experts in the field of growth and

development. Move people, not cars. It’s time for Southern California

to grow up and get serious about the rapid transit of people and

goods.

Send it out off

Newport Beach

I’m very much in agreement with dumping the dredge material off

Newport Beach (“Dump site in waters sought,” Tuesday). I am in favor

of it.

Dumping create can

New York Beach

I’ve lived here for 57 years, and I think officials have killed

the ocean enough. You’ve got to stop dumping in it because -- just

like I said 30 years ago -- you might as well call this New York

Beach.

Stand tall and

salute the flag

I live on a postcard island in Newport Beach. This morning, while

walking down our tiny main street, I came upon a young man raising an

American flag over our storefront post office.

What was I to do? Stop? Watch? Salute? I felt a strong sense of

pride and patriotism, and yet, I didn’t know what kind of response

the raising deserved. What kind of respect do we pay to that thing

which we see everyday and which represents what we want to believe is

true about our country?

I don’t agree with everything America does or stands for. I

confess to being embarrassed by decisions our country has made

throughout its existence. But I am proud to live in a country that

raises a flag everyday and gives me the freedom to stop and think

about how I want to show it my respect.

Hurrah for the flag of the free!

May it wave as our standard forever.

Restaurant-bar move suggests slogan change

Hooters the bar is moving to Harbor Boulevard and South Coast

Drive, a location frequently mentioned in the Pilot’s police files as

a site for arrests for prostitution.

Perhaps the City Council should suggest changing the city title

from “City of the Arts” to the more descriptive “City of Hooters,

Hookers and Arts.”
