Learning center happenings
Thasa Zuziak
The children at Community Learning Center have been busy learning
about their community and the surrounding area. They took a field
trip to see our City Hall, Fire and Police Stations. They were each
given a chance to sit up in the City Council seats and a chance to
ask our Mayor Cheryl Kinsman many questions. She was gracious with
her time for the children.
The kids took a field trip to the Ocean Institute in Dana Point to
learn about our local sea life and our water quality. Each child
participated in testing our water to check the levels of bacteria.
They became even more aware of what they can do as individuals to
help protect our coastline.
The Community is getting ready for it’s eighth annual trip down to
Baja, Mexico to the Puerto de Faith Orphanage. We all go as one big
family with alumni included, and camp at the orphanage for the
weekend. Once we arrive we are assigned a community service project
to do for the day such as painting, planting their garden or even
helping to build a new room.
We provide and cook two meals while down there for the hundreds of
children who live at the orphanage full time. It is a wonderful sight
to see all the children interacting and playing and watching the CLC
kids try out their Spanish, which they have been learning all
yearEvery year the kids are assigned a service project that they
document and present to the rest of the class. The money they earn
goes toward this endeavor. The kids were just assigned this year’s
projects, so if you see groups of kids selling baked goods, wanting
to walk your dog or wash your car remember they are working for a
good cause.
Last year they wrote and produced a song called “One Peace at a
Time.” They have been singing their song across Southern California
at different events and selling the CD for $5. All of the proceeds
are going to the purchase of the van as well. If you are interested
in making donations or buying a CD you can call 363-4224 and leave a
message and we will get back to you.
