Orange Coast wins opener

Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team won its Orange Empire

Conference opener, defeating host Palomar, 25-11, 25-9, 25-15, Friday

night.

Scott Sankey led the Pirates (3-1, 1-0 in the OEC) with 10 kills,

while Drew Ginther had 25 assists and eight service aces. Glenn Henry

led in digs with 16.

Ginther opened up both the first and second games serving up four

aces for the Pirates, who host Santa Monica Wednesday at 6 p.m.

CdM powers Chargers

* WATER POLO: Katie Indvik tallied three goals to lead the Corona

del Mar High girls water polo team past visiting El Toro, 7-4, in a

nonleague game Friday.

Katlin Kubas, Cari Levine, Chelsea Lyman and Taylor Harkins all

added a goal apiece, as the Sea Kings improved to 20-6 after already

clinching first in the Pacific Coast League.

‘Eaters rained out

* BASEBALL: UC Irvine’s baseball home opener scheduled for Friday

against the University of Washington was rained out. It has been

rescheduled as part of a doubleheader scheduled today.

The first game is at 1 p.m., with the second to follow 30 minutes

afterward at Anteater Ballpark.

UCI right-hander Chris Nicoll (1-0 with an 0.00 ERA) will face

Washington’s preseason All-American Tim Lincecum in the first game

today. The Huskies are ranked No. 8 by Baseball America.

UCI senior Glenn Swanson is scheduled to oppose Kyle Parker in the

second game.

UCI gets swept

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team was swept,

30-27, 30-27, 30-23, by host Long Beach State Friday in a

nonconference game, as LBSU’s Robert Tarr racked up a game-high 30

kills.

Jayson Jablonsky led the Anteaters (3-6) with 14 kills and two service aces, while Jon Steller added seven kills and one ace. David

Smith and Aaron Harrell had six kills apiece.

Duncan Budinger had 11 kills for Long Beach State, as the 49ers

improved to 6-3.

Sage wallops Whitney

* SOCCER: Sage Hill School junior Zach Milder scored three goals

to lead the Lightning boys soccer team to a 7-1 win over visiting

Whitney in the Academy League finale Thursday.

Milder added an assist, while sophomore teammate Richard Gadbois

had one goal and two assists.

Freshman Beau Caillouette had two assists for the Lightning

(8-8-1, 8-2 in league).

Braden Ross, Conrad Whitaker and freshman Jimmy Miller also scored

for the winners.

* SWIMMING: Corona del Mar High is seeking a boys swim coach for

Sailors even record

* SURFING: Lisa Turk and Tanner Prairie each won their fourth

events of the season to power the Newport Harbor High surf team to a

95-73 nonleague victory over visiting Edison Thursday morning at 56th

Street in Newport Beach.

Newport (4-4) claimed three of five events: Boys short board,

along with boys and girls long board competitions against the

Chargers, currently second in the Sunset League.

Turk secured the high score (5.4) of the girls long board

competition while Prairie paced the boys long board team, which

staged its best performance of the season in sweeping the top three

positions. Chase Smith and Christopher LoMenzo took second and third

place, respectively, as each surfer tallied an average wave score of

more than 5.

The boys short board teams won all four heats with an aggregate

score of 51-33.

Daniel Shea, the South Coast League individual champion, and

Stevie Farmer each tallied their fifth first-place finishes with Shea

averaging 5.2 per wave. Joey Head and Christian Morabito each placed

first in their heats. Charlie Buckingham took second while Reagan

Riley, Taylor Lobdell and Brett Catron each placed third.

Mahea Hookano took third in the girls long board event while

Taylor Simpkins finished third in the girls short board competition.

Harry Tully placed second for the Sailors in the body board event.

Next up for the Sailors will be visiting Marina on Tuesday.

OCC women prevail

* TRACK AND FIELD: The Orange Coast College women’s track and

field team defeated Riverside and Santa Ana in a three-way

nonconference meet Friday at Santa Ana College. The OCC men placed

second.

The OCC women won with 78.5 points, while Santa Ana (51.5) was

second and Riverside (45) was third. On the men’s side, Riverside

(77.5) was first, followed by Coast (71) and Santa Ana (28.5).

The Coast women dominated the 1,500 meters, with Ludi Valdez,

Gabriela Santana, Emilie Vo and Jewel Butler placing in the top four.

UCI’s Evans selected

* SOCCER: UC Irvine sophomore men’s soccer standout Brad Evans is

among 30 players invited to the upcoming U-20 national team training

camp in Florida.

Evans was the 2004 Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year

after leading the Anteaters with seven goals. The first-team

all-conference selection also had three assists for the Anteaters,

who finished 7-13-0.

The invitees also include teenage sensation Freddy Adu, who plays

for Major League Soccer’s D.C. United.

While in Florida, the U-20s will play MLS teams, the U.S. national

select team and the U-18 national team. The U-20 national team has

qualified for the U-20 World Cup in Holland this summer.

Evans, who helped the California state select team win a national

title in January, is the second UC Irvine player invited to play with

the U-20 team.

UCI’s Mike Mucino was on the U-20 national team in 1997.

“The opportunity to train with the top players in the country is a

fantastic experience for Brad and we know he will represent UC

Irvine, the Big West Conference, and himself well,” UCI Coch George

Kuntz said.

‘Eaters’ duo lauded

* SWIMMING: UC Irvine senior Kim Do and freshman Eddie Erazo were

each named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week for their swimming

performances at UC Davis and University of the Pacific.

Do swam the lead leg of the 200-yard medley relay that broke the

school record twice that weekend. She finished first in the 200

backstroke at Pacific, then was first in the 200 back, second in the

100 back, and third in the 50 freestyle at UC Davis.

Do’s performances against the Tigers helped UC Irvine become the

first Big West school since 2001 to claim at dual-meet win over

Pacific.

Erazo won the 200 back and the 200 medley relay against Pacific.

He was first in the 200 and 100 butterfly events against UC Davis.

Jablonsky recognized

* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine sophomore Jayson Jablonsky has been named

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week in men’s

volleyball.

The 6-foot-5 outside hitter pounded 19 kills to lead UCI to an

upset sweep of UC Santa Barbara Feb. 2. Jablonsky hit .750 for the

match, which ranks sixth in the UCI single-match annals.

In UCI’s five-game, near-upset of Cal State Northridge Feb. 4, he

had five service aces and 14 kills, a career-high six block assists

and a season-best eight digs.

Mesa players sign

* SOCCER: Seniors Jenny Sparks and Nilani Duarte of the Costa Mesa

High girls soccer team signed letters of intent last Wednesday to

play soccer for George Mason University, a Division I school in

Fairfax, Va.

Stepanski stays local

* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College women’s basketball sophomore

forward Lauren Stepanski gave a verbal commitment to continue her

collegiate career at NAIA school Concordia University in Irvine,

Orange Coast Coach Mike Thornton announced.

Stepanski, who attended Woodbridge High, will follow in the

footsteps of recent Coast players Nancy Hatsushi, Lauren Murray and

Liz Mendoza and play for the Eagles next season. She is currently

averaging 12.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game for the Pirates.

Erickson a candidate

* BASEBALL: UC Irvine sophomore Blair Erickson is among 42 on the

initial watch list for the 2005 Roger Clemens Award, given to the top

pitcher in college baseball.

Erickson, a 2005 preseason All-American, amassed a Big West

freshman record 17 saves in 2004 and was the conference’s inaugural

Freshman Pitcher of the Year. The closer collected seven All-American

titles last season after finishing with a 4.10 ERA and a 1-3 record.

He struck out 51 in 37 1/3 innings.

The list is comprised of all Division I pitchers who were

preseason All-Americans by either Baseball America or Collegiate

Baseball, in addition to those named National Pitcher of the Week

this season by the National College Baseball Writers Association.

Weekly winners of the writers’ award will be added to the list

until the voting begins in late April. Nominees may be added based on

notable performances and NCAA statistical rankings.

The second Clemens Award will be presented at the conclusion of a

gala dinner in Houston July 14.

All Division I head coaches will take part in the voting, in

addition to a panel of national media and all past winners of the

award, formerly known as the Rotary Smith Award.

Palisades Club gives

* TENNIS: More than $1,500 was raised to aid the victims of

December’s tsunami in Southeast Asia in the Pink Ball tournament at

Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach Sunday.

Phil Hamilton, a top 6.0 player, recruited eight players for the

event, which raised money for Mercy Corp. and UNICEF charities.

UC Irvine assistant men’s tennis coach Jon Endrikat took first

while former Anteater Carsten Hoffman finished second. George Tate

and John Cross placed third and fourth, respectively.

Susie Gaunt took top honors in an intermediate tournament

featuring players ranked 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0.

Two points are awarded for a winner in the pink-ball format.
