Pitchers key VU split

Vanguard University pitchers produced a dominant display in Monday’s

nonconference baseball doubleheader against visiting Bethany, but the

Lions managed only a split.

Vanguard’s Andrew Riddle, Brent Erickson and Michael Guernsey

combined for a three-hit shutout in a 7-0 first-game victory, as the

trio pitched three innings apiece.

Riddle earned the win and is now 1-0.

But Bethany managed a 1-0 win in the second game, despite another

combined pitching gem from Lions Clay Brown (four shutout innings and

only two hits allowed) and Matt Franco (two hits and three strikeouts

in three innings).

Junior center fielder Isaac Salazar and senior shortstop Aaron

Barret were catalysts in the opener. Salazar went 2 for 2 with three

walks and scored twice, while Barret was 2 for 3 with two walks. Both

drove in one run.

Franco was 2 for 3 with a run in the opener, while Nikolaus Crouch

drove in two and Michael Grant added an RBI for the winners.

Vanguard, however, managed just three hits in the second game off

of Jacob McKinley, who fanned six and walked just one in the

complete-game shutout.

Franco had a hit and a walk in Game 2, which left Vanguard with a

3-5 record.

Bethany’s second-game triumph, created by a suicide squeeze in the

fifth inning, was its first win in nine games.
