Coast track teams win easily

Both Orange Coast College men’s and women’s track and field teams

earned resounding victories in an Orange Empire Conference dual meet

against Santiago Canyon at Santa Ana College Thursday.

The Coast women took 14 of 16 events -- four athletes won two

events -- to claim a 116-17 victory. Newport Harbor High product Elda

Hernandez won both the 400 meters (1:03.7) and 400 hurdles (1:18.6)

while Tayler Cusick and Aabria Lipscomb each doubled. Cusick claimed

the long jump (16 feet, 1 inch), and triple jump (34-2 1/4 ) while

Lipscomb bested opponents in the discus (114-4) and shot put (33-7

1/2 ).

Joanna Williams won the 100 (13.50) and high jump (4-10).

Two Coast men won two individual events as the Pirates claimed 13

of 16 competitions to defeat Santiago Canyon, 119-24.

Cameron Clavin took top honors in the shot put (38-1) and discus

throw (130-1) while Kyle Peterson won both the 110 hurdles (16.70)

and pole vault (11-7).

Former Estancia standout Humberto Rojas placed first in the 3,000

(8:44.9).

Lions keep rolling

* BASKETBALL: Kelly Schmidt put up a game-high 25 points to lead

the Vanguard University women’s basketball team past host Fresno

Pacific, 80-54, Thursday in a Golden State Athletic Conference

matchup.

Lisa Faulkner added 17 points for the Lions (24-3, 15-2 in the

GSAC), while Lacey Mills chipped in 11 points. Vanguard shot 47.5%

from the field and 40% from beyond the arc.

Melissa Montoya had a team-high 23 points for Fresno Pacific

(13-13, 6-10).

CdM closes season

* BASKETBALL: Bishop Montgomery High’s girls basketball team

jumped out to an early lead and just kept hitting shots on its way to

a 73-16 CIF Southern Section Division III-A wild-card playoff victory

over visiting Corona del Mar Thursday night.

Roney Friend, a freshman for Montgomery (16-11), pulled down a

game-high 15 rebounds and drained 13 points. Whitney Warren added 10

points for the Knights.

Junior Katie Schulte led the Sea Kings (14-15) with 10 points,

while Megan Benbow, Kristina Wayte and Sanya Wadhwa combined for

CdM’s other six points.

UCI loses series opener

* BASEBALL: James Platt pitched four scoreless innings of relief

to pick up the save for starter Dave Horlacher as the visiting

Brigham Young University baseball team opened its season with a 5-1

nonconference victory over host UC Irvine to begin a three-game

series Thursday

Kory Knell went 2 for 5 with two RBIs for the Cougars while

Anteater starter Chris Nicoll fell to 2-1 on the year after allowing

four runs on seven hits while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.

The ‘Eaters (5-2) were limited to four hits. UCI left fielder

Gregg Wallis went 1 for 3 with one a run scored. Horlacher stuck out

five while scattering four hits and allowing one run in five innings.

* BASEBALL: Southwestern College’s baseball team scored 18 runs in

the third inning of Game 1 of its nonconference doubleheader against

host Orange Coast en route to a 23-0 victory after five innings

Thursday. Coast (5-3) also dropped the second game, 3-2. The second

game was called due to rain with one out in the top of the ninth

inning.

Dallas Hubbard went 4 for 4 with four runs scored while Juan

Carlos Perez and Oscar Ochoa each tallied four RBIs for Southwestern

(4-2) in the first game as Juan Velasquez and David Julio limited

Coast to one hit.

The Pirates combined for eight hits in two games, seven in the

nightcap. Stephen Schneider went 3 for 4 while Stephen Cope finished

2 for 3.
