Three Newport-Mesa high school teams will compete in their respective

CIF Southern Section Division semifinals tonight.

Estancia’s boys basketball team will face second-seeded

Harvard-Westlake in the Division III-A semifinals at 7:30 tonight at

Edison High in Huntington Beach. In girls water polo, Newport Harbor,

seeded second in Division I, faces No. 3 seed- Montebello at 7 p.m.

at Irvine High while Corona del Mar, the top seed in Division II,

battles Peninsula at 5 p.m. at the same site.

UCI upsets Idaho

* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team shot a

season-high 51.9% from the floor to defeat Idaho, 71-60, in a Big

West Conference game at the Bren Events Center Thursday.

The Anteaters shot 63% in the second half and were led by Ashley

Biggins’ career-high 20 points. The center was 8-9 from the floor and

grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Angie Ned added 16

points in the win.

Clear earns win

* BASEBALL: Ryan Clear pitched seven innings allowing three runs

and five hits and receiving the win to lead the Orange Coast College

baseball team past visiting Grossmont, 16-5, in a nonconference game

Thursday.

Coast (6-3) used an eight-run third inning to pull away, 10-0, and

put the game out of reach for Grossmont (1-6).

OCC women roll

* TENNIS: In an Orange Empire Conference match, the Orange Coast

College women’s tennis team pulled away with a 5-4 victory over

visiting Saddleback on Thursday.

In singles, OCC (1-0, 3-0 overall) led, 2-0, after victories from

sophomore Michelle Esquivel and freshman Jessica Rice.

In doubles, the Pirates walked away with one loss and two 8-4

victories by the teams of Esquivel and Rice in the first match, and

Paulson and Rachael Sessum in the second, which gave OCC their first

conference victory this season.

Gauchos topple Coast

* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College men’s tennis team played all

three singles matches to three sets, but lost to host Saddleback,

6-3, in Orange Empire Conference play Thursday.

No. 3 singles player Colby Morita pulled out the lone singles win

for Coast (3-1, 1-1 in the OEC), 6-4, 6-0, while the doubles teams of

Scott Fielder-Fernando Jota and Jared Haley-Victor Jacobs both won.
