It was completely disingenuous of St. Andrew’s representatives to

hold a meeting at Newport Harbor High school on their plans to pay $3

million to improve school parking -- no strings attached!

Fortunately, neighbors are not so easily duped. We all know that

without a parking agreement with the Newport-Mesa school board their

22,000-foot expansion is a nonstarter.

A few parking spaces at the high school will not change neighbors’

minds about the presence of a regional mega church in their midst. I

hope that the Newport-Mesa school board does not cave in to the

interests of the church against the wishes of the residential

community.

I think it’s awesome. I think it’s time that we get together and

share facilities, and if we can share a parking lot, I think that’s

wonderful, and you know, we’re giving to each other and supporting

each other, and we’re in a community. That’s what our world needs to

be all about. Also, I think it’s incredibly sad that the neighborhood

is giving any hesitation to applaud St. Andrew’s for providing a

youth center in the neighborhood.

I am absolutely against St. Andrew’s getting in bed with Newport

Harbor High School. St. Andrew’s is out of line; it should not

expand. Newport Harbor High School doesn’t need the parking. I am

absolutely against it.

I am unalterably opposed to the proposed parking agreement between

St. Andrew’s Church and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

Reason. The agreement is contrary to the best interests of the

Cliffhaven neighborhood for many reasons and is proposed on a false

premise on the part of St. Andrew’s Church. Without this agreement,

there can be no St. Andrew’s expansion.

I feel that St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church needs to minister to

its flock, instead of trying to become a commercial venture --

soliciting membership and funds at the expense of an existing,

historically quiet neighborhood.

A parking structure on 15th Street would be an added detriment to

our traditionally peaceful neighborhood. A school parking structure

would make much more sense on 16th Street, near the football stadium.

Sixteenth Street has a proximity to Dover, 17th Street and Coast

Highway, without cutting through the neighborhood’s quiet streets.

My son has worked with the high school kids off-and-on for 10

years as a volunteer. He’s been very much involved in the high school

ministry at St. Andrew’s and has had a major impact on a lot of the

lives of the kids who are in that program.

I am very much for it. I feel that there should be some way for

everyone to come to an agreement on this issue.

I think it’s really sad that it hasn’t happened so far.
