Placentia man arrested for alleged stabbing

Costa Mesa police arrested a Placentia man Monday on suspicion of

attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed a bus driver during the

weekend.

Jorge Pimentel, 26, was arrested at about 9:15 a.m. Monday, Costa

Mesa police Lt. Dale Birney said. Birney did not have information on

where Pimentel was arrested.

At some time Sunday, Pimentel reportedly stabbed an Orange County

Transportation Authority bus driver in the hand with a “screwdriver

type of weapon,” Birney said.

The bus was traveling on Bristol Street between Town Center Drive

and Anton Boulevard during the alleged attack.

Pimentel was also arrested on suspicion of making terrorist

threats.

Fire knocks out power in Newport Coast

A fire in an electrical vault in Newport Coast on Saturday evening

knocked out power to 30 homes and almost knocked firefighters out as

well.

Three fire engines from the Newport Beach Fire Department

responded to the 8:30 p.m. call at Pelican Hill Circle. When they

arrived, the firefighters found eight- to 10-foot flames coming from

the vault.

About 15 minutes after they arrived, an explosion blew a grate off

the vault. It just missed hitting several firefighters, said Newport

Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz.

None of the firefighters was injured in the blast or during the

incident.

Firefighters called Southern California Edison and, after smelling

a hint of gas, the Gas Co.

Residents in the area were evacuated from their homes.

Firefighters finished battling the blaze at about 10 p.m. and

handed the job over to Edison workers.

Tom Boyd, a spokesman for Edison, said an investigation into the

incident is ongoing, and they have yet to determine the exact cause

of Saturday’s fire.

“This sort of thing happens very infrequently,” Boyd said. “We’re

very thankful no one was hurt in this incident.”

Parts of harbor are

closed to swimming

The Orange County Health Care Agency on Sunday closed the Rivo

Alto Channel from 43rd Street to 38th Street and Balboa Coves to

swimming and diving due to a sewage spill.

Newport Beach lifeguards said they did not know any details of the

spill, but they were asked to post public health notices to warn

neighborhood residents and any potential fishermen or swimmers.
