Vanguard earns title

The Vanguard University women’s basketball team won its third

straight Golden State Athletic Conference title and redeemed a Jan.

25 loss to Azusa Pacific by defeating the Cougars, 99-94, Tuesday in

a conference closer at Azusa.

Kelly Schmidt led the Lions (27-3, 18-2 in the GSAC) with 26

points, while Lacey Mills (6 of 7 from beyond the arc, 20 points),

Lisa Faulkner (18), Melissa Cook (15) and Lacey Burns (13) all scored

in double digits. Azusa’s Kelsey Hudson had a game-high 33 points.

Vanguard enters the GSAC tournament the top seed and will host

California Baptist 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Azusa Pacific (22-9, 14-6)

enters fourth-seeded.

Miller sparks CdM

* TENNIS: Senior Wesley Miller swept his sets to lead the Corona

del Mar High boys tennis team to an 11-7 season-opening victory over

visiting Brentwood Tuesday.

Miller defeated his three opponents, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman

Fabian Mathews won two sets at No. 3 singles for CdM (1-0), while all

three doubles teams -- Alex Nguyen-Robert Koury, Spencer

Reitz-Jonathan Kroopf and Matt Chou-Ryan Caughren -- won two sets.

CdM hosts Beverly Hills at 3 p.m. Thursday.

CdM cruises to win

* VOLLEYBALL: Corona del Mar High’s boys volleyball team opened

its season by sweeping visiting El Toro, 25-16, 25-17, 25-13, Tuesday

in nonleague play.

Senior Kevin Welch led the Sea Kings (1-0) with 11 kills and five aces, while senior Ted Slaughter had five kills. Slaughter’s brother,

Ted, a junior, also had five kills. Senior setter Grant Almquist had

14 assists and sophomore setter Phil Bannon added 12 assists.

Pirates pound Hornets

* TENNIS: Spencer Soloman and Colby Morita lost only two games in

sweeping their singles sets as the host Orange Coast College men’s

tennis team rolled through Fullerton, 9-0, in an Orange Empire

Conference match Tuesday.

Morita improved to 4-0 in singles this season while Jared Haley,

Hiroshi Muto, Victor Jacobs and Scott Fielder all swept their sets

for OCC (5-1, 3-1 in the OEC).

CdM’s Story gets glory

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team opened up the

season with a 193-215 victory over Mission Viejo at Newport Beach

Country Club Tuesday.

Senior Matt Story was the medalist by shooting a 1-over-par 36 for

CdM. Senior Ben Tilsen and junior Cody Stewart each shot 38s on the

day and junior Jamie Bloom shot a 39 for the Sea Kings.

Triple keys VU win

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team played a make-up

date against their crosstown rival and Golden State Athletic

Conference foe Concordia University Tuesday, beating the visiting

Eagles, 4-3.

Reliever Bobby Klein (2-1) earned his second win of the season

while right fielder Matt Voorhies came up with a clutch

bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the eighth to drive in the

winning run.

The Lions (6-8, 3-3 in the conference) move into second place in

the conference with the win.

In the eighth, Voorhies came to the plate with the bases loaded

and worked the count to 3-2 before he drove a fast ball to the

left-center field gap, clearing the bases.

OCC’s Takamori shines

* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team won 96

games and only lost 10 in its 9-0 sweep of Orange Empire Conference

foe Fullerton Tuesday at Fullerton.

Sophomore Ai Takamori defeated Ashley Niles, 6-0, 6-0, in the No.

5 singles and teamed with Julie Haley to defeat Niles and Viktoria

Koos, 8-0, in the No. 3 doubles finish the day without losing a game.

OCC (4-0, 2-0 in conference) play host to Grossmont College

Thursday at 2 p.m.

UCI falls short

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team launched a two-run seventh

inning, but fell one run short and lost to visiting UNLV, 3-2, in

nonconference action Tuesday at Anteater Ballpark.

Danny Miramontes hit 2 for 5 for UCI (6-6), while Matt Anderson,

Erik Johnson and Jaime Martinez were all 2 of 4. UCI closer Blair

Erickson pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing no hits and striking out

four.

UNLV improved to 3-10.

Sostak is medalist

* GOLF: Junior Marcus Sostak shot well enough to earn medalist

honors for the Estancia High boys golf team, but the Eagles lost to

visiting Long Beach Millikan, 234-231, in a nonleague season opener

Tuesday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Sostak shot 41 with two birdies and three pars at the par-36

course in Costa Mesa. Estancia (0-1) tees off against Millikan again

Thursday at El Dorado Park in Long Beach.

Sage Hill loses opener

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team lost to

visiting Jserra, 13-25, 25-18, 25-17, 14-25, 15-12, in the season

opener for both teams.

The Lightning, coming off a CIF Southern Section Division V

semifinal appearance last year, was led by junior opposite hitter

Jake Lazere’s eight kills and nine service aces.

Freshman outise hitter Jamie McGee finished with five kills and

freshman setter Carl Hillgren had 16 assists.

Sage falls to Mater Dei

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School boys tennis team lost to host Mater

Dei, 16-2, in each school’s first match of the 2005 season.

Dan Chin and Conrad Whitaker defeated Chase Mites and Martin

Puman, 6-3, in No. 1 doubles, and Michael Garrison and Tyler Ross

defeated Will Danse and Sam Cooder, 7-5, in No. 2 doubles for Sage’s

lone victories.

Coach A. G. Longoria said he was not disappointed in the way his

team performed because the Monarchs are a good team.

Longoria said the Lightning will continue to play Division I

schools to prepare for the Academy League schedule.
