CdM team advances

The Corona del Mar Soccer Club boys under-12 team advanced to the

next round of the California Open State Cup playoffs following a 4-0

victory over the California Youth Authority of Los Angeles at the

Lancaster National Soccer Center last weekend.

Colton Gyulay led CdM with two goals, one in the first minute and

the other in the second half. Steven Miller and Mason Case tallied a

goal apiece for CdM.

Logan Newett, Will Morrow, Blake Thomsen, Brent Gray, Nick Curci,

Brennan Anderson, Mikey Pawell, Brent Lawson, Jack Gorab, Jensen

Rinehart, Kjell Wolker and Taylor Ross all contributed to the win.

CdM continues play among 32 teams this weekend in Lancaster.

* BASKETBALL: The Newport-Mesa third and fourth grade National

Junior Basketball Lakers defeated the Capo-Dana Rockettes in

overtime, 24-21, in the first round of the 2005 Championship Series,

a three-game tournament pitting various Los Angeles, Orange and San

Diego county teams against each other.

Keaton Gaughan, Regan O’Hara, Madison Fancher, Dana Krekemeyer,

Kelsey Humphreys, Maddie O’Connor and Annie Alvarado all played for

the Lakers.

* BASKETBALL: The Newport-Mesa third and fourth grade NJB Funky

Monkeys lost to Rancho Santa Margarita, 28-14, Sunday. Grace Kennedy,

Kylie Mulyaney, Alexandria Mote and Kendall Mulyaney all played for

Newport.

* SOFTBALL: The Pacific Coast Fastpitch girls under-14 ASA

softball team swept a doubleheader against two Garden Grove teams,

with Rene Mycorn hitting two home runs to lead the team out of a 4-4

tie in the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game.

Mycorn also hit a three-run homer in the first inning, which was

followed by Elizabeth Cramer’s single, who eventually scored for a

4-0 lead at the end of the first. Mycorn pitched all six innings of

the first game, giving up four runs and striking out five batters.

Michelle Zucker, Baylee Robertson, Leslie Kazmarek, Kadee Malone and

Brittany Kane held up the defense.

Lauren Tolfa pitched the second game, allowing three runs with

five strikeouts in the 4-3 victory. Robertson hit a triple in the

third inning, giving her two RBIs, while Brittany Martinez had a key

single in the fourth inning. Other key defensive players were Melanie

Sitzer, Angela Graham, Emily Kaplan, Karina Viet and Chelsea

Petersen.

* BASEBALL: Little League opening-day times and places:

Newport Harbor Baseball Association -- 10 a.m. today at Ensign

Junior High.

Newport Beach Little League -- today.

Costa Mesa National Little League -- 9 a.m. today at TeWinkle

Middle School.

Costa Mesa American Little League -- 9 a.m. today at Costa Mesa
