Lightning bested in final

The Sage Hill School boys tennis team reached the final of the

Lightning invitational, but lost to defending CIF Southern Section

Division V champion Viewpoint, 11-7, at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet

Club Saturday.

Sage (2-2) defeated Savanna, 12-6, in the semifinals and ousted

Beaumont, 14-4, in the quarterfinals.

Senior Tristan Cordier, senior Dan Chin and sophomore Conrad

Whitaker represented Sage Hill on the all-tournament team.

Sage hosts Santa Margarita at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Spartans top ‘Eaters

* WATER POLO: Visiting San Jose State earned a 10-4 Mountain

Pacific Sports Federation women’s water polo victory over UC Irvine

Sunday.

Molly Feeney’s goal gave UCI a 2-0 lead, but the Spartans (6-9,

1-3 in the MPSF) scored the next five goals.

UCI (6-7, 1-3) closed to within 5-4, but the visitors pulled away.

Robyn Kaake had a team-high two goals for UCI, which received four

saves from Lauren Machanis.

Mary Beth Cox and Jamie Schneider had three goals apiece for San

Jose State.

Lions earn honors

* TRACK AND FIELD: Four Vanguard University men’s track and field

members earned All-American honors after placing in events at the

NAIA indoor national finals in Johnson City, Tenn. Saturday.

Senior Brandon Shaw finished third in the 800 meters in 1 minute,

54.82 seconds.

The Lions’ distance medley relay team of Shaw (1,200), Costa Mesa

High product Zach Powell (400), Ryan Allen (800) and Matt Meyer

(1,600) placed fifth in 10:13.78.

The top six finishers receive All-American honors.

Quakers down UCI

* TENNIS: Visiting Penn defeated UC Irvine, 5-2, in a

nonconference women’s tennis match Sunday.

Senior Anna Bentzer was the UCI’s lone singles winner, while UCI

won the doubles point.

UCI skid extended

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team saw its losing

streak grow to six, falling to No. 5-ranked Penn State, 30-21, 30-26,

29-31, 30-25, at the Triton invitational Saturday at La Jolla.

Penn State (16-2) posted a 64-55 kill advantage, sparked by Keith

Kowal’s 17 to lead all players.

Jayson Jablonsky led UCI (6-13) with 16 kills while Matt Webber

and David Smith had 11 and 10, respectively.

Hewko, Stanford win

* WATER POLO: Former Corona del Mar High standout Christina Hewko

was one of three players to score two goals as the No. 3-ranked

Stanford women’s water polo team downed host UC Irvine, 11-2, in a

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Saturday.

The Cardinal (10-2, 3-0 in the MPSF) took a 4-0 lead in the first

period with three goals on the player advantage.

UCI sophomore Robyn Kaake scored on a six-on-five with 5:32 left

in the second period to cut the lead to 4-1.

Stanford then scored the next seven goals, before Alicia Weider

added a goal in the fourth period for UCI.

* BASEBALL: Michael Guernsey struck out four and allowed one run

in tossing a five-hitter to help host Vanguard University defeat The

Master’s, 2-1, in eight innings to salvage a Golden State Athletic

Conference baseball doubleheader split Saturday.

Freshman Luke Iverson roped a line drive off the left-field wall

to drive in Kyle Franz with the winning run for the Lions (9-9, 5-4

in the GSAC).

The Master’s won the first game, 3-2.

Guernsey (2-2) struck out four while walking two in the

eight-inning complete game.

Joe Candelaria was 2 for 3 with an RBI in the second game Lions

for the Lions, winners of five of their last seven conference games.

Tom Barrington’s solo home run in the top of the ninth helped the

Mustangs (8-6, 4-5) secure the victory in Game 1 after Vanguard,

which had 12 hits, evened it at 2 in the eighth when Clay Brown’s RBI

single scored Matt Voorhies.

Mike Sparks, Todd Merz and Aaron Barret all had two hits for

Vanguard in the first game.
