Lifeguard rescues man who jumped from pier
An unidentified man jumped off the Newport Pier at 3:39 p.m.
Tuesday and was rescued by a Newport Beach lifeguard, officials said.
According to lifeguard Lt. Mike Halphide, a waitress from the
restaurant at the end of the pier saw the young man jump off and
immediately called the lifeguards.
“He was clinging onto one of the pilings so he was not a strong
swimmer,” Halphide said. The pilings are covered in barnacles and are
quite painful to touch, let alone cling to, officials pointed out.
Lifeguard Lt. Brent Jacobsen of the Newport Beach Lifeguards
rescued the young man and, according to Halphide, the man did not
need any further medical assistance and was released.
Although there are signs warning people not to jump off the pier,
some choose to disobey. Halphide said they do not reprimand those
people, but rather try to educate them on the possible dangers of
jumping into 15 to 20 feet of water.
Coroner identifies woman found on beach
Orange County Coroner investigators on Tuesday identified the body
of a woman that washed ashore in Newport Beach last week.
The body turned up late Friday afternoon in the area of Crystal
Cove State Park, Newport Beach Police said. It appeared to have been
in the water for more than a week, investigators said.
The woman was identified as Torrance resident Pamela Lore, 55,
Orange County Supervising Deputy Coroner Joseph Luckey said.
Her cause of death has not been determined and may not be known
for about six weeks, he said.
Lore was reported missing to Torrance Police on Feb. 24, Torrance
Police Lt. Rod Irvine said. She had been missing for three days at
the time of the report, he said.
