Mesa View wins seventh-grade basketball title
The Mesa View Middle School seventh-grade boys’ basketball team
captured the 2005 Ocean View School District postseason championship
by edging Spring View, 44-43.
The teams tied for the regular season championship and earned a
rubber match in the postseason tournament by winning their semifinal
games.
In the semis, Spring View handled Vista View and Mesa View escaped
Marine View.
In a divisional final that featured several lead changes, Spring
View took a 43-42 lead with 9.5 seconds to play. Then Mesa View’s
Wade Houston drove through the lane and put up a layup that hit the
front of the rim and rotated into the basket to give the Eagles the
lead.
A desperation shot by Spring View fell short, and Mesa View came
away with the championship.
In a frantic fourth quarter, Sean Guite hit consecutive
three-point baskets and Mesa View teammate Madha “Hoosier” Dada
connected on a key put-back shot in the final minute that gave the
Eagles a 42-41 lead.
Ryan Okwudibonye and Johnson Anwell scored go-ahead baskets in the
closing minutes, and Chad Lewis had a game-high 17 rebounds for
Spring View.
