Baseball, softball signups today

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley will hold signups for

its Gene Autry RBI League, a free, coed softball and baseball league,

from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today at its Kingston Branch, at 16582 Brookhurst St. in Fountain Valley.

The Gene Autry RBI League is designed to give youngsters the

opportunity to play in an organized league in addition to learning

life skills in a prevention program.

The league is a partnership of Angels Baseball, the Boys & Girls

Clubs in Orange County and Major League Baseball.

Both softball and baseball seasons will start in April, with

transportation from the Kingston and Huntington Beach branches to and

from playing fields provided by the Club.

Softball games will be played Tuesdays or Thursdays, between 5 and

7 p.m., and baseball games will be played Mondays or Wednesdays,

between 5 and 7 p.m.

For baseball, age classifications are as follows: Junior Boys,

ages 12 to 15, and Senior Boys, ages 16 to 18.

For softball, the age classification in Junior Girls is ages 12 to

15.

All ages determined by date of birth on or after Aug. 1, 1986.

On the field, the Gene Autry RBI League will concentrate on

fundamentals and teamwork, while stressing citizenship and academics.

Off the field, Boys & Girls Club staff members teach RBI players

QuickSmart (Skills Mastery And Resistance Training), a nationally

acclaimed Boys & Girls Club prevention program designed specifically

for RBI assists kids in making smart choices regarding alcohol,

tobacco, and other drug use.

The Gene Autry RBI League is free of charge. Participants will

receive uniforms, awards, eight games and playoffs. All players must

provide their own gloves and cleats. All participants in the RBI

League must be current members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of

Huntington Valley.

Membership is $15 per year, valid September 2005 to August 2006.

Scholarships are available for low-income families. Volunteer coaches

are also needed, for a minimum of one practice and one game weekly.
