Mesa doubles shine

Costa Mesa High swept all nine doubles sets and the Mustangs remained

unbeaten following a 13-5 Golden West League boys tennis victory over

Santa Ana Thursday.

Brian Nguyen and partner John Dang, along with the duos of Ted Lee

and Shea Huffman and Garrett Sneen and Ken Shida, combined for the

nine wins while Huy Le claimed two of three singles sets for Mesa

(3-0, 2-0 in league).

Daniel Gomez and Jonathan Courtney also earned singles victory for

the Mustangs.

Rabinovich shoots par

* GOLF: Zach Rabinovich shot even-par 36 to earn medalist honors

and lead the visiting Corona del Mar High boys golf team to a 194-210

victory over Mission Viejo in nonleague play Thursday at Mission

Viejo Country Club.

Rabinovich made one birdie and one bogey, and out-dueled the

Diablos’ Cameron Tringale, who received a golf scholarship at Georgia

Tech. Tringale shot 37.

Matt Story shot 38 for the Sea Kings (3-2), while Ben Tilsen David

Su and Cody Stuart all shot 40.

Sailors win fifth straight

* SURFING: The Newport Harbor High surf team claimed six of seven

heats en route to a 93-50 victory over Calvary Chapel -- the team’s

fifth straight win -- at 56th Street in Newport Beach Tuesday.

The Sailors (6-4) captured 17 of the 21 top three positions,

including five first-, six second- and six third-place finishes.

Newport’s boys short board team swept the top three positions in

three of the four heats while capturing first and third in the fourth

heat. Daniel Shea, the South Coast League individual champion, and

Christian Morabito each tallied a high wave score of 4.9 to place

first in their respective heats.

Shea placed first for the seventh time this year while Morabito

topped his heat a fourth time. Brett Catron and Brian Doheny each

took first, too.

Taylor Lobdell, Nathan Petty and Evan Hochwald all placed second

while Artemus Gregurak, Luke Sequeira, Reagan Riley and J.J. Frei all

finished third.

Robert Guy took second while Bennet Schlesinger placed third for

Newport’s victorious boys long board team, which earned a 12-9

victory.

Lisa Turk finished first a sixth time this season in leading the

Sailor girls long board team to victory. Teammate Devon Falasco

placed third.

Turk and Falasco placed second and third, respectively, for the

losing girls short board team.

The Sailors face Edison at 6:15 a.m. Thursday at the Santa Ana

river jetty.

OCC women perfect

* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team remains

undefeated overall and in the Orange Empire Conference after an 8-1

victory over visiting Riverside on Thursday.

OCC’s Michelle Esquivel and Jessica Rice swept their opponents in

each of their singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, and in their doubles set, 8-0.

In doubles, Rachael Sessum and Emily Paulson, along with Julie

Haley and Ai Takamori won, 8-3, to give OCC an early 3-0 advantage.

The Pirates (8-0, 5-0 in OEC), won the first five singles sets,

but sophomore Rachael Sessum lost in the sixth set, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Estancia whips Orange

* TRACK AND FIELD: Both the boys and girls track and field teams

of Estancia High held their ground against visiting Orange in a

Golden West League opener Thursday. The boys won, 95-30, and the

girls won, 85-30.

Senior Bryce McKendry led the boys charge for the Eagles (1-0),

placing first in the high jump (5-4), long jump (21-1) and triple

jump (40-4 1/4 ), while also placing second in the 110-meter high

hurdles (18.8). Junior Ernie Castenada won both the 1,600 (4:42.5)

and the 3,200 (10:30.3) and sophomore Ryan Whites won the 110 high

hurdles (17.5) and the 300 hurdles (46.58).

Sophomore Emily Carr won the 100 (14.1), 200 (29.6) and long jump

(17-4) for the girls (1-0), while sophomore Jai Hellmich won both the

high jump (4-6) and triple jump (31-3).

Coast wins again

* TENNIS: Spencer Solomon, Jared Haley, Hiroshi Muto and Victor

Jacobs all won their singles sets to help the visiting Orange Coast

College men’s tennis team to its fourth straight win following a 6-3

Orange Empire Conference triumph over Riverside Thursday.

Jacobs, trailing a set and down, 5-2, in the second, claimed the

next 11 games to defeat Alex Talbi. Jacobs, along with Solomon and

Muto, all needed three sets to secure wins. OCC (7-1, 5-1 in the OEC)

took a 4-2 lead after singles play.

Solomon and Haley, along with Scott Fielder and Muto, earned 8-3

and 8-1 doubles victories, respectively.

Eagles blank Aztecs

* SOFTBALL: The Estancia softball team defeated host La Quinta in

a 14-0 nonleague victory.

The Eagles scored one run in the third inning, and three in the

fifth, but the domination was in the sixth inning when Estanica

scored nine runs off 10 hits.

The Eagles were helped out by sophomore pitcher Hilary Ockey who

had three strikeouts and pitched a no-hitter.

On Saturday the Eagles will face Saddleback in the Mesa

tournament.

OCC defeats Gauchos

* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team defeated

Saddleback, 8-7, on Thursday in an Orange Empire Conference game.

The Pirates (9-7, 3-1 in OEC) attacked early on and ended the

third inning with a 6-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, OCC’s catcher Josh Banda hit a solo homerun

to put the Pirates up, 7-2. The Gauchos, (9-2, 1-2) came back in the

sixth inning to score 4 runs.

In the seventh, Saddleback’s Montana Dye hit a homerun to bring

them within one, but OCC walked away with the win after neither team

scored in the eighth or ninth inning.

CdM bests Rancho

* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team used a three-run

third inning to best visiting Rancho Alamitos, 5-3, in a nonleague

game Thursday.

CdM (2-2) strung together three hits together in the fifth inning

and Alamitos (0-3) walked two and had two errors to give up the five

runs.

Sophomore Michelle Tolfa pitched the full seven innings for the

Sea Kings, striking out nine batters while allowing five hits and

four walks. From the plate, Tolfa was 1 for 3 with a double, an RBI

and a run scored.

CdM opens play in the Downey tournament at 3 p.m. Saturday at

South Gate Park.

Waves roll through UCI

* VOLLEYBALL: Host Pepperdine University tallied an 18-2 advantage

in blocks and sent visiting UC Irvine to its seventh straight loss

with a 30-28, 30-27, 30-25 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory

Thursday.

Tom Hulse and Jonathan Winder each had four block assists, part of

Pepperdine’s 14 for the match. UCI (6-15, 4-10 in the MPSF) had two.

Matt Webber led three Anteaters in kills with 14 followed by

Jayson Jablonsky and Aaron Harrell, who each added 10.

Sean Rooney slammed a match-high 19 kills for the second-ranked

Waves (12-1, 12-1), who hit at a .398 clip (55 of 113).

Dolphins edge Sailors

* GOLF: Despite a coach satisfied with his team’s finish, the

Newport Harbor boys golf team lost, 187-199, in a nonleague match

against Dana Hills on Wednesday at El Niguel Country Club.

Davis Pemstein of Newport (2-2) was a co-medalist at 36, while

Chris Willard (38), Andrew Skjonsby (39), Justin Moorhead (40),

Brandon Sowers (46) and Rhett Palmer (49) finished for Newport

Harbor.

The Sailors will face Foothill at Tustin Ranch on Monday.

Newport topped

* TENNIS: Playing without its regular No. 2 singles player Jake

Fleming, who is out with a muscle strain, the Newport Harbor High

boys tennis team lost to visiting Fountain Valley, 13-5, in a

nonleague meeting Thursday.

No. 1 singles player Robert Khoury swept his sets for Newport

(1-2), 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, while Taylor Friend won his last set, 6-4,

filling in for Fleming.

Fountain Valley (3-1) swept all doubles matches against the

Sailors, who visit Dana Hills at 3 p.m. Monday.

* GOLF: The visiting Sage Hill School boys golf team topped

Irvine, 210-217, in a nonleague matchup Thursday at Oak Creek Golf

Club.

Junior Josh Chen shot 39 to lead the Lightning (3-1), while Ryan

Babbush (39), Geoffrey Grant (41), Will Rigby (45) and John Neff (46)

also scored for Sage.

Irvine dropped to 1-3. The Lightning host Mater Dei at 3:15 p.m.

Tuesday at Strawberry Farms Golf Club.

Lions victorious

* TENNIS: The fourth-ranked Vanguard men’s tennis team, according

to Thursday’s release of the NAIA Men’s Top 25 rankings, defeated

Hope International, 9-0, on Thursday.

Vanguard’s (6-1, 4-1 in GSAC) Dieter Weislmaier and Christoph

Schramm won in the number three doubles, 8-0.

Vanguard’s Cyril Conry lost only one game in two sets (6-1, 6-0)

at number three.

In the number four and five singles, Andreas Reckziegel and

Schramm shut out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0, giving the Lions an 8-0

lead.

Calle Holmgren finished the match off in the number six singles by

defeating Trevor Welday, 6-0, 6-2.

The Lions 9-0 victory marks Vanguard’s fourth straight shutout

this season.

On Tuesday the Lions will host Lewis-Clark of Idaho.
