Local Irish establishments are seeing green

Diehard St. Patrick’s Day revelers are finicky about what makes a St.

Patty’s party complete.

They have a stringent list of requisites to properly show off

their dyed green hair, “Kiss Me I’m Irish” pins, shiny green beads

and leprechaun tights. Some celebration necessities include pints of

green beer, live traditional Irish tunes, plates of corned beef and

cabbage, and Guinness on tap.

Here are five local Irish pubs throwing festive parties to please

them.

* The Harp Inn in Costa Mesa kicks off Saint Patrick’s Day

celebrations Tuesday at 8 p.m. It should be a relaxed evening,

compared to the all-day party starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

Festivities on St. Patrick’s Day include live Irish music from the

Limericks and traditional Irish fare, including corned beef

sandwiches, corned beef sausage rolls and corned beef and cabbage

rolls ($7). Available beers include Guinness, Harp and Smithwicks;

and Irish coffee is served with fresh whipped cream.

Owner John Lyons, from County Mayo in Ireland, says it’s the only

Irish-owned bar in Costa Mesa.

* Although St. Patrick’s Day is inherently crazy, Skosh Monahan’s

will attempt to run the day as normally as possible. The steakhouse

and Irish pub will open at its regular time, 4 p.m., and offer its

regular daily menu.

The traditional Irish fare includes bangers and mash ($11.50);

corned beef and cabbage ($11.50); Irish lamb stew ($9.50); and Irish

coddle, banger, bacon, mushrooms and onions with red potatoes and

gravy ($10.50). There’s also a large selection of appetizers, steaks,

sandwiches, salads, and pizzas.

Green beer will be served. Guinness and its premium well vodka,

Boru, from Ireland will be giving out St. Patty’s Day beads, buttons

and other party items.

* Malarky’s has celebrated St. Patrick’s Day since 1977, and it’s

their busiest day of the year. At least 1,000 customers will join in

the fun at this Irish pub.

It will open at 7 a.m. for breakfast, which includes corned beef

hash and eggs and hash browns ($6). Pre-made corned beef and turkey

sandwiches will be served until 1 p.m., and then the kitchen closes.

* Muldoon’s Dublin Pub & Celtic Bar will celebrate St. Patrick’s

Day with festivities starting at 10 a.m. The Van Demans will play

traditional Irish music from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Jason Feddy and the Shananagins will perform traditional Irish

tunes, along with modern hits from U2 and the Cranberries, from 5

p.m. to 11 p.m.

There’s a special St. Patrick’s menu, including shepherd’s pie

($19.50); fish and chips ($19.50); corned beef and cabbage ($19.50)

and Irish stew ($19.50). Entrees come with choice of salad, mushroom

and barley soup, and homemade Irish soda bread and sweet butter. In

the Celtic Bar, hot food is served all day.

* Durty Nelly’s will serve an Irish breakfast, from 9 a.m. to 11

a.m., of banger and beans, tomato, eggs, bacon and toast ($6.95). A

limited menu of 10 Irish items will be available from lunch to 11

p.m.

Live music will start at 8 p.m. with a $10 cover charge. Outside

seating is available, and a tent will be sent up in the parking lot.
