Sailors stun Knights

The Newport Harbor High boys golf team made a huge statement in its

Sea View League opener Monday upsetting Foothill, 198-201, in windy

conditions at Tustin Ranch Golf Club.

Sophomore Justin Moorehead paced the Sailors (3-2, 1-0 in league)

with a 1-over-par 37 to earn medalist honors.

Seniors Davis Pemstein and Rhett Palmer both shot 39, while Andrew

Skjonsby shot 41 and both Brandon Sowers and Chris Willard shot 42.

“It was a huge win for us, a good team win,” said Newport Harbor

Coach Scott Tarnow, who believes the Sailors had not beaten the

Knights for four years.

“Foothill and Aliso Niguel were both the teams to beat in our

league,” Tarnow said.

Mustangs handle Cavs

* BASEBALL: Sophomore Chad Peterson threw five solid innings, Ryan

Szwast was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Alex Pisarski sparkled on the

mound and with the bat in Costa Mesa High’s 6-3 nonleague baseball

win over visiting Santiago Monday.

Peterson earned the victory in his first varsity start, while

Pisarski followed a shutout inning by Chad Morton with a perfect

seventh to earn his first save this season.

Pisarski also doubled, while Szwast and fellow senior Dylan Hunter

(3 for 3 with two runs) accounted for five of the Mustangs’ nine

singles.

Szwast, who leads Mesa (5-1) with eight RBIs this spring, singled

in two in a four-run third and added an RBI single in a two-run

fifth.

Santiago fell to 1-5.

Eagles top Aztecs

* SWIMMING: Junior Chad Kunert and senior Sean Goodman won two

individual events and swam on both victorious relays to lead host

Estancia High to a 93.5-57.5 nonleague boys swimming victory over La

Quinta Monday.

Kunert won the 500-yard free (5 minutes, 19.40 seconds) and the 50

free (24.95 seconds). He swam the leadoff leg on winning the 200

medley relay and anchored the victorious 400 free relay.

Goodman topped the field in the 200 individual medley (2:30.40)

and the100 butterfly (1:05.71).

Junior Devon Mellin won the 200 free, was second in the 500 free

and was on both winning relays, while junior Andrew Fassari won the

100 backstroke (1:03.58) and was also on both winning relays for the

Eagles.

Estancia improved to 2-2, while La Quinta fell to 1-1.

Anteaters blank foe

* TENNIS: UC Irvine senior Brian Morton swept two sets at No. 1

singles and also won in doubles to lead the host Anteaters to a 7-0

nonconference men’s tennis victory over Georgia Southern Monday.

Morton, a Corona del Mar High product, teamed with Rye Kashiwabara

for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles to help UCI improve to 9-6.

Kashiwabara, Victor Lamm, Peter Surapol, Mustafa Ulukan and Olof

Sjolund also won in singles for the ‘Eaters.

Surapol and Uluka also won at No. 3 doubles.

The Anteaters play host to No. 16 Texas Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Choe shares lead

* GOLF: UC Irvine junior Jay Choe is tied for the individual lead

and the Anteaters are tied for third after the first day of the

Anteater men’s golf invitational at El Niguel Country Club in Laguna

Niguel Monday.

The final 18 holes are scheduled today.

Choe (72-70--142) and David Kim from San Jose State share the

individual lead after 36 holes. Both are 2-under par.

UCI’s Brian Edick is eighth (73-75--148) and teammate Kenny Kim is

13th (69-82--151).

Playing individually, UCI’s Will Park is fifth (71-74--145) and

UCI’s Nate Yates is eighth at (76-72--148).

San Jose State holds a three-shot lead with 36-hole total of 592.

University of the Pacific is second, while UCI and the Arizona B

team are tied at 599.

Vanguard overwhelmed

* BASEBALL: Host Vanguard University belted four home runs,

including two by Nik Crouch, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the

Illinois Institute of Technology, which posted a 15-9 nonconference

baseball victory Monday.

Crouch went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, while Mike Sparks and Matt

Voorhies also homered for the Lions, who fell to 9-13.

Aaron Baret was 2 for 5 for Vanguard, which pulled to within 8-4

in the seventh.

Perfecto dooms Pirates

* SOFTBALL: Cypress College sophomore Morgan Sanchez pitched a

perfect game to lead the Chargers to a 12-0 Orange Empire Conference

softball victory over visiting Orange Coast Monday.

Sanchez struck out two in the game called after five innings due

to the mercy rule.

OCC fell to 1-16, 0-7 in conference, while Cypress improved to

13-5, 7-1.
