Vanguard in quarterfinals

The Vanguard University women’s basketball team set a single-season

victory record with an 82-71 victory over Carroll College of Montana

in the second round of the NAIA tournament Friday in Jackson, Tenn.

The Lions (32-3) broke last year’s school record of 31 wins to

advance to today’s quarterfinals. Vanguard, ranked No. 2 nationally,

will meet Union of Tennessee (32-5) tonight at 6 CST.

Union, which held off North Georgia, 83-75, in overtime Friday,

defeated Vanguard, 64-54, Nov. 19 in a tournament game also played at

Oman Arena in Jackson, Tenn.

Sophomore All-American Kelly Schmidt amassed a game-high 29 points

and 14 rebounds and sophomore Rachel Besse added 20 points, five

rebounds and four blocks for the Lions.

Senior All-American point guard Lisa Faulkner chipped in 12 points

and six assists, while starters Lacey Burns and Lacey Mills had nine

and eight points, respectively.

Vanguard shot 61.5% from the field in the first half (16 of 26) to

open a 41-32 lead and finished 29 of 54 from the field (53.7%).

Eagles rally twice

* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team built some

character by rallying for two Division II pool-play victories in the

Orange County championships Friday at Estancia High.

The Eagles, who lost most of their lineup from last year’s CIF

Southern Section Division III championship run, defeated Villa Park,

17-25, 25-23, 17-15, then outlasted El Toro, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10.

Senior setter Trevor Holmes, an All-CIF returner, sparkled for the

Eagles. He had 24 assists against Villa Park, then amassed 23

assists, eight kills, seven digs and four aces against El Toro.

Junior Scott Markley had 13 kills and junior Alex LaGrande had

seven against Villa Park.

Against El Toro, junior Shaun Markley had 10 kills and junior

Dallas Kopp added seven.

The Eagles (7-3) close out pool play today at 9 a.m. against

Tesoro.

CdM wins a pair

* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team opened

with two Division I pool play victories at the Orange County

championships Friday at Marina High.

The Sea Kings defeated Marina, 25-19, 25-20, then outlasted Los

Alamitos, 25-21, 25-27, 15-10, to improve to 11-3.

CdM faces San Clemente today at 9:15 a.m. to conclude pool play,

also at Marina.

Senior Kevin Welch had 17 kills and Phil Bennett added 26 assists

against Marina.

Against Los Al, Welch had 13 kills and 15 digs, both team highs.

Ted Slaughter added 12 kills, while Adam Smith had 14 digs and

seven kills and Tom Welch had nine digs and five kills.

Anteaters victorious

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team defeated Stony Brook of

New York, 3-2, in the opening round of the UCI tournament Friday.

Chris Nicoll improved to 3-1 with 6 1/3 quality innings and Blair

Erickson struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save.

Matt Wagner was 3 for 4, Chad Lundahl was 2 for 2 and Brett Dalton

was 2 for 3 with an RBI for the winners (12-9).

Stony Brook fell to 5-6.

OCC tops Olympians

* VOLLEYBALL: Orange Coast College freshman outside hitter Ky Fell

produced a match-high 10 kills to lead the Pirates past Orange Empire

Conference visitor San Diego Mesa, 25-16, 25-16, 25-20, Friday.

Fell added two blocks and one ace to help OCC improve to 5-5, 2-0

in conference.

Eric Hill and Estancia High product Josh Kornegay had five kills

apiece for the winners, who received five blocks from Urah Seui and

four from Estancia High product Scott Sankey.

Peirsol captures 15th

* SWIMMING: Newport Harbor High product Hayley Peirsol finished

15th in the 400-yard individual medley to highlight locals competing

at the NCAA Division I women’s swimming and diving championships

Friday at Purdue University.

Peirsol, a sophomore at Auburn, finished in four minutes, 16.34

seconds. She had posted the 11th-fastest qualifying time in the

prelims.

The top eight qualifiers swim in the championship final and those

nine through 16 make up the consolation final.

Newport Harbor High product Nicole Mackey, a sophomore at Hawaii,

was 17th in 2:00.74, just missing the final consolation final berth

in the 200 IM Thursday.

Mackey was 29th in the 100 backstroke (55.04) Friday.UCI freshman

Chelsea Nagata was 33rd in the 100 butterfly in 55.14. She entered

the meet with the ninth-best qualifying time.

Nagata was 47th in the 100 backstroke (58.34).

CdM adds to streak

* BASEBALL: The Corona del Mar High baseball team won its 19th

straight Pacific Coast League game Friday, beating visiting

Northwood, 7-4.

Northwood was the last league school to hand the Sea Kings a

defeat almost two years ago on May 6, 2003.

Vinnie St. John pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings to get his first

save of the season.

Eric Eadington scattered four hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking

out three to improve to 3-0.

Tyler Lance had a two-RBI single in the first and Taylor Alston

hit an RBI triple in the third for CdM (5-2, 1-0 in league).

Newport swept twice

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team lost

two Division I pool play matches in the Orange County championships

Friday at Edison High.

The Sailors lost, 25-18, 25-18, to Edison in the opening match and

25-21, 25-22 to Mater Dei in the second match.

Perrine led all Newport hitters with 19 kills on the day. Ted

Slater finished with 53 assists and four blocks.

Newport Harbor (2-6) finishes pool play today at 8 a.m. against

Capistrano Valley at Edison.

JSerra defeats Sage

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team lost,

25-20, 16-25, 29-27, 22-25, 15-12, to host JSerra in a nonleague

match Friday.

Senior Jake Lazere had 13 kills and four service aces for the

Lightning (0-5).

Middle blocker Michael Morgan had eight kills and three blocks,

while freshman setter Carl Hillgren had 29 assists.

Sage Coach Merja Connolly-Freund said the level of play was much

better than the two schools had in the season opener, in which Sage

was plagued by numerous passing errors.

“Both teams improved greatly from that first match,” she said.

“The No. 1 improvement for us was our passing.”

VU designs sweep

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team swept visiting

Savannah Art & Design in a nonconference doubleheader Friday.

The Lions won the first game, 2-0, and completed the sweep with a

7-3 triumph to improve to 10-12.

Jennifer Olvera singled in two runs in the first and struck out

eight in six shutout innings, allowing just one hit, to star in the

opener.

Melissa Benson tripled in two runs and scored on Holly Martinez’s

RBI single to answer a two-run first by the visitors in the second

game.

Vanguard added two in the second and two in the fourth to secure

the win.

Heather Durham went 4 for 4 with two RBIs in the second game,

while Benson and Olvera also drove in two runs apiece.

Wolverines wallop Tars

* BASEBALL: Visiting Aliso Niguel High belted three home runs to

key a 10-1 Sea View League-opening baseball win over Newport Harbor

Friday.

Newport Harbor scored its only run in the first on an RBI by

senior catcher Jeff Sanchez, who along with junior Skylar Cozad and

sophomore Brett Houten accounted for the Sailors’ three hits.

The game was called after five innings due to rain.

Newport Harbor fell to 3-4, 0-1 in league.

Lightning take licks

* BASEBALL: Sage Hill School senior Matt Loper went 3 for 4 with a

home run, a double and four RBIs, but host Oxford Academy earned a

21-9 Academy League-opening baseball victory Friday.

Sage Hill committed nine errors to hurt its cause.

Sage Hill fell to 2-4, 0-1 in league.
