Sea Kings sail along

Robert Koury and Andrew Dialynas didn’t lose a doubles set while

teammate Dan Tat accomplished the same feat in singles as the

visiting Corona del Mar High boys tennis team opened Pacific Coast

League play with a 16-0, rain-shortened victory over Laguna Beach

Tuesday.

Matt Chou won three sets while Brent Pham won two for CdM (6-0),

playing without Wesley Miller, Fabian Matthews and Ryan Caughren,

whom Coach Tim Mang said are playing in national tournaments.

Alex Nguyen and Sean Pham, along with the duo of Spencer Reitz and

Jonathan Kroopf, each lost just two games in sweeping their doubles

sets.

CdM, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division I, hosts No. 3

Woodbridge at 3 p.m. today.

OCC beats Bakersfield

* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team used a five-run

eighth inning to defeat Bakersfield, 8-3, in the second day of

competition of the Palomar Easter tournament Tuesday at Palomar

College.

Bobby Slater hit an RBI double and Danny Gonzales hit an RBI

sacrifice fly before Josh Banda’s pinch-hit two-RBI single.

Slater finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two doubles. Robbie

Blauer was 3 for 4 with an RBI single in the second inning for OCC

(12-8-1).

Steve Johns allowed three hits and one walk in six innings of work

while striking out four batters.

The Pirates are 1-1 in the tournament and finish play Thursday

against Glendale at home at 2 p.m.

Mesa, Lions tied

* BASEBALL: Visiting Costa Mesa High and Westminster were tied,

2-2, when umpires called the Golden West League baseball opener for

both teams in the bottom of the fifth inning due to inclement weather

Tuesday.

Westminster took a 2-0 lead on two unearned runs in the second,

but Mesa countered with a run each in the third and fourth.

Senior Alex Pisarski doubled and scored on an attempted squeeze

the Lion catcher missed in the third. Jeff Waldron doubled, stole

third and scored on Kyle Benson’s sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Pisarski allowed three hits, two walks and struck out two.

VU splits doubleheader

* SOFTBALL: Vanguard University’s softball team defeated visiting

Columbia, 6-1, in the second game of a doubleheader, but lost the

first game, 3-2, Tuesday in nonconference action.

Both Melissa Smith and Judy Bell were 2 for 3 from the plate for

Vanguard (13-13) in the second game, with one RBI apiece. Melissa

Benson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs in the second game.

Heather Durham was 2 for 3 in the first game with an RBI. Beth

Burchell was 1 for 2, also with an RBI in the first game.

Columbia is now 19-7.

Oilers sweep CdM

* VOLLEYBALL: The rematch between the Corona del Mar High boys

volleyball team and Huntington Beach again went in favor of the

Oilers Tuesday at Huntington Beach High in a nonleague match.

Huntington, which beat the Sea Kings Monday night in the finals of

the Division I Orange County championships at Edison High, swept CdM,

25-20, 25-21, 26-24.

Senior outside hitter Kevin Welch finished with a team-high 11

kills, while junior middle blocker Scott Slaughter registered 10

kills.

CdM, which falls to 13-5, had a 22-18 lead in the third game, but

the Oilers went on a five-point run to regain the lead and eventually

win.

Winless Sage swept

* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School boys volleyball team ended its

pre-league schedule winless, losing to visiting San Marino, 25-11,

25-15, 25-18, Tuesday.

Coach Merja Connolly-Freund said the Lightning, who fall to 0-6,

committed too many unforced errors in the passing game, resulting in

inconsistent offensive attacks.

Connolly-Freund said the team is improving, especially Michael

Morgan, Shane Webster and Will Fletcher. The trio have never played

volleyball before and have taken huge steps in the month since the

season started.

Connolly-Freund also lauded the growth of freshmen starters Jamie

McGee and Carl Hillgren. She said both players have taken major

strides.

The Lightning host Oxford April 5.

Sage game postponed

* BASEBALL: The Sage Hill School baseball team’s game at Whitney

Tuesday was halted after four innings due to rain. Sage was leading,

1-0. The game will be resumed April 19.

Foursome honored

* SOCCER: Newport Harbor High had four boys soccer players named

to the All-Sea View League teams.

Senior defender David Manchester and senior midfielder Kevin

Shearer were first-team selections for the Sailors, while senior

midfielder Eduardo Garcia and junior defender Nicholas Hendrick were

named to the second-team.

Laguna Hills junior forward Mike Lemus and Woodbridge junior

midfielder Kenny Kaneko were named co-players of the year.
