Gleason, Sailors blank Aliso
Senior Ashley Gleason struck out seven, walked one and allowed two
hits to help the host Newport Harbor High softball team open Sea View
League play with a 2-0 victory over Aliso Niguel Thursday.
Gleason improved to 7-2 and received strong defense, including an
unassisted double play by freshman second baseman Jane Messersmith.
Robin Gautschi’s RBI double in the third scored Darci Pennington
while Lauren Talbott also added a double.
Gautschi had two hits for the Sailors (10-2), winners of four
straight.
Sea Kings victorious
* TRACK AND FIELD: Tiffany Liu won four events to lead the Corona
del Mar High girls to a 105-21 Pacific Coast League track and field
victory over visiting Laguna Beach Thursday.
Cliff Taylor, meanwhile, led the CdM boys to a 69-58 win over the
Breakers.
The CdM boys and girls swept the shot put and discus.
The girls also swept the 800, 1,600, 3,200, long jump and triple
jump.
Junior Annie St Geme won the 1,600 in 5:17, and the 3,200 in
11:37.
Cliff Taylor (53.2), Taiki Sakai (23.4) and Tri-Vien Nguyen (55.7)
swept the 400 for CdM.
Newport girls prevail
* TRACK AND FIELD: The visiting Newport Harbor High girls track
and field team swept five events in a 98-38 Sea View League victory
over Irvine while the boys fell, 70-62, Thursday.
Sailor sophomore Jessica Robson won four events including the
100-meter hurdles in 12:00, the long jump (16-3 1/2 ), triple jump
(34-3) and high jump (5-0).
Whitney Blue (800 and 1,600) and Jessica Bodkin (pole vault and
discus) were double-winners for the Sailors.
Sean Campos won the 110 high hurdles in 16.16 and the 300
intermediate hurdles in 45.44, while Bo Taylor won shot put (56-3)
and discus (152-6 1/2 ).
Tolfa tosses shutout
* SOFTBALL: Sophomore Michelle Tolfa scattered six hits, struck
out seven and walked two as the host Corona del Mar High softball
team defeated nonleague foe San Clemente, 1-0, Thursday.
Michele Allred went 3 for 3 with a stolen base, while Heather
Lohrman finished 1 for 2 with a two-out RBI single in the first
inning for CdM (7-6).
CdM faces Back Bay rival Newport Harbor at 10 a.m. Saturday in the
first game of a doubleheader between the teams.
Pirates back on top
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team bounced
back from its first loss Wednesday with an 8-1 Orange Empire
Conference victory over host Irvine Valley Thursday.
OCC’s Jessica Rice swept at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while
teammates Michelle Esquivel, Emily Paulson, Julie Haley and Rachael
Sessum each won their singles sets.
In doubles, the Pirates (12-1, 8-1 in conference) swept with
victories from Esquivel and Rice, Paulson and Sessum, as well as
Haley and Ai Takamori.
Eagles take victory
* TENNIS: The Estancia High boys tennis team slid past Orange in a
10-8 Golden West League victory Thursday.
In singles, Eagles junior Scott Braunsdorf and freshman Bradley
Fisher won two of their three sets.
In doubles Chase Raymond and David Do and Chris Alvergue and Josh
Ross also triumphed in two sets.
Dolphins top Sailors
* GOLF: Dana Hills High edged Newport Harbor, 195-198, in a
nonleague boys golf match Thursday at Santa Ana Country Club.
Davis Pemstein and Spencer Quinn both shot 39 to lead the Sailors.
Chris Willard, Justin Morehead and Andrew Skjonsby all shot 40 for
Newport (6-6).
Lions drop twin bill
* SOFTBALL: Candice Thomas improved to 16-0 and the visiting Cal
Baptist University softball team scored an unearned run in the top of
the sixth inning to break a tie and eventually give the Lancers a 4-3
victory, capping a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader
sweep over Vanguard Thursday.
The fifth-ranked Lancers (29-2, 8-0 in the GSAC) also made their
unearned run count in a 1-0 victory over the Lions (15-15, 2-6) in
the first game. Vanguard’s Jen Olvera allowed just two hits and
struck out six, but fell to 4-2.
Vanguard falls short
* BASEBALL: A solid outing by Vanguard University starter Mike
Guernsey and a solo home run by Matt Voorhies weren’t enough to
prevent the Lions from dropping a 3-1 Golden State Athletic
Conference baseball decision to host Concordia Thursday.
VU left Isaac Salazar at third in the first and stranded runners
at second and third in the second and Concordia opened the scoring in
the second for a 1-0 lead.
Concordia led, 3-0, before Vorhies went deep in the fourth.
Vanguard fell to 9-17, 5-8 in conference, while Concordia improved
to 10-14, 6-7.
Bruins best Anteaters
* WATER POLO: Top-ranked UCLA cruised to a 14-4 Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation women’s water polo victory over visiting UC Irvine
Thursday.
Robyn Kaake and Jessica Lewis had two goals apiece for No.
11-ranked UCI (11-10, 4-6 in the MPSF).
UCLA improved to 21-0, 6-0 and is 9-0 all-time against UCI.
