Support for Music in the Park

What do you call a get-together involving families, friends, food,

community and music? It is our own Music in the Park.

For eight Sundays every summer Bluebird Park becomes host to one

of our favorite community events. Families gather to connect, unwind,

share food, dance, mingle and listen to fantastic music. Our children

play on the structures and slides with all of their friends. They

will even save a dance or two for their parents. The laughter and joy

is contagious during the event.

Music in the Park offers a program for locals and families. We

thank the neighbors for giving up some quiet time for a few hours for

eight Sundays. It is a one-of-a-kind gem for our community. If you

love Music in the Park, please come show your support at the City

Council meeting Tuesday. Please come show your support!

Residents should dance to Music

My original intention was to write about how so many in our

community love the summer concerts on Sunday evenings in the park.

How families of all kinds and ages gather to share a wonderful

experience. However, I’ve decided instead to address those who have

been complaining.

I would like to invite each of them -- they know who they are --

to join us. Invite some friends, let them park in your driveway,

bring some blankets or beach chairs and some food and drinks to

share, and find a spot to sit on the lawn. Enjoy the music of that

particular weekend and if it becomes too loud to have a conversation,

get up and dance. Forget about your TV for a few hours and just let

the songs fill your heart.

You’ll feel less grouchy and younger for the experience. I’ll bet

that by the end of the season you will be wishing there were more of

these weekends, not fewer.

Arts Commission ignored concerns

I thought I was going to a meeting of the Arts Commission to talk

about ways to help modify the “concerts in the park” for the

surrounding neighborhood. I was happy to hear someone was finally

going to listen to our concerns.

Instead, the chairperson was hostile and, I believe, ridiculed

anyone that objected to the current program.

Originally, this series was four Sundays in Bluebird Park.

Surrounding communities’ concerts are four Sundays. If we must have

more “music in the park,” put the other four Sundays in another park,

please. Make it easier for residents in other parts of the city to

enjoy the music.

Sending the same program back to City Council is no solution. This

attitude demonstrated to me that compromise was never on the agenda.
