Beerer sparks UCI

The UC Irvine men’s track and field team successfully defended its

title in the Big West Conference Challenge Cup as the Anteaters

posted a winning total of 185 points to defeat host Long Beach State

by two points. UC Santa Barbara was third with 154 and Cal State

Fullerton fourth with 120 points.

Ricky Barnes and Scott Jarvis won two events each for UCI. Barnes

finished first in the 1,500 meters (3:51.43) and the 3,000 meters

(8:19.26), while Jarvis won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.18 and

the 400-meter hurdles in 53.70.

The Anteaters’ Mike Beerer won the hammer throw with a mark of 197

feet, 6 inches, the second-best throw in UCI history. Dayne Comrie

finished first in the 400 meters (47.97), Tom Whelan won the 800

meters (1:51.26) and John Wratten captured the high jump with a mark

of 6-10 3/4 . UCI’s 4x400-meter relay of Jarvis, Omar Lopez, Storm

Huie and Comrie won in a time of 3:15.90.

In the women’s competition, UC Santa Barbara won the team title

with 202 points, Long Beach State was second with 189, Cal State

Fullerton third with 135 and UCI fourth with 94.

UCI senior Kim Ramirez won the 800 meters with a lifetime best of

2:11.74 and finished second in the 1,500 meters (4:32.28). Suzanne

Purmort placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (62.95) and Kirsten

Loftin was second in the pole vault at 11-11 3/4 . Orlisha Henlon

picked up a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 meters (12.16)

and the 200 meters (24.92).

Lions sweep Westmont

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball completed a

three-game sweep of Golden State Athletic Conference opponent

Westmont Saturday by winning both games of a doubleheader at

Vanguard.

The Lions (12-17, 8-8 in conference) won the morning game, 7-6, in

11 innings and broke out for an 11-0 victory in the second game.

Vanguard also beat the Warriors, 14-7, Friday at Westmont.

Nikolaus Crouch went 4 for 6 with three RBIs and three runs scored

in Saturday’s two games. Mike Sparks was 2 for 7 with five RBI and

three runs scored.

Crouch hit a three-run homer in the second inning in the first

game and scored the winning run in the 11th on Matt Franco’s

pinch-hit double to right.

Sparks hit a grand slam in the seven-run fifth inning of the

second game.

Franco scattered three hits over seven innings in the second game

to earn his first win of the season.

The Lions play at California Baptist Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Eagles soar in meet

* TRACK AND FIELD: A number of athletes medaled for the Estancia

High girls track and field team at the Cerritos Invitational

Saturday.

Ashley Rodriguez finished first in her heat in the 400-meter

(1:48), seventh in the 1,600 (6:24) and was a member of the

fifth-place finishing 400 relay (0:59) as well as the fifth-place

finishing 1,600 relay (7:31).

Also on the relay teams were Paula Negrete, Magali Onofre and

Okairy Lomeli.

Negrete also finished second in her heat in the 800 (4:18) and

third in the 1,600 (6:38).

Onofre was first in her heat in the 1,600 (6:07) and second in the

3,200 (21:54).

Lomeli was sixth in her heat of the 80 (4:16) and third in the

1,600 (10:12).

Karla Luna was second in her heat of the 400 (2:09), third in the

800 (5:15) and fifth in the 1,600 (12:10).

Lucy Leon was second in the 1,600 (10:25) and second in the 3,200

(23:37).

Jai Hellmish was second in the triple jump (30-feet, 11-inches),

third in the long jump (13-9 1/2 ) and fifth in the high jump (4-10).

‘Eaters reach final

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team won all six singles

matches to rebound from a 1-0 deficit after doubles play and reached

the final of the eighth annual UCI Spring invitational with a 5-2

semifinal victory over San Francisco Saturday.

The Anteaters (9-8) will face Santa Clara (10-4) for the

championship at noon today. Santa Clara defeated New Mexico State,

5-2, Saturday.

UCI’s Anna Bentzer defeated Camille Pamart, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, but Joana Macedo gave San Francisco a 2-1 lead with her 6-2,

6-0 win over freshman Becky Bernhard.

The ‘Eaters regained the lead with victories from freshman Inna

Agababian and Jayme Hu and Izabela Mijic clinched the victory with a

6-1, 6-4 win over Emma Taylor at No. 2 singles.

‘Eaters down Pacific

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team edged out host

Pacific, 30-28, 27-30, 30-23, 28-30, 15-12, in a Mountain Pacific

Sports Federation match Saturday.

The No. 11th-ranked Anteaters had five players in double-digit

kills, paced by Aaron Harrel and Jayson Jablonsky’s 17 kills. The

mark tied a career-high for Harrell. Matt Webber and Steffin Rangel

each put away 15 kills apiece while David Smith added 13 kills for

the squad. Setter Brian Thornton had 65 assists while Jablonsky paced

the team with 11 digs.

UCI (7-18, 5-13 in the federation) travels to UC Santa Barbara

Thursday at 7 p.m.

Chandy places second

* TRACK AND FIELD: Sage Hill School junior Zach Chandy finished

second overall in the varsity boys 400-meter race in 48.88 at the

Trabuco Hills invitational Saturday, his first time racing at this

event.

Chandy has qualified for the 400 in Friday’s Arcadia invitational,

which attracts national-caliber runners, at Arcadia High.

Sage’s Connor Rose finished the frosh-soph boys 1,600 at the

Trabuco Hills invitational in 4:58 while Lightning sophomore Erica

Faris took third in her heat of the girls 800 in 2:39.9.

Gauchos defeat UCI

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team lost, 6-1, to host UC

Santa Barbara Saturday.

The Anteaters, ranked No. 74 in the nation, lost two out of three

doubles matches to dig a 1-0 hole going into the singles matches.

Seniors Brian Morton and Rye Kashiwabara defeated Nick Brotman and

Ivan d’Argence 8-6 in the No. 1 match for UCI’s lone doubles win.

In singles, junior Olof Sjolund defeated Anders Dalskov 6-4, 6-4

in the No. 6 match for the ‘Eaters lone point of the day.

Lions drop pair

* SOFTBALL: Natalie Brown combined for 15 strikeouts in tossing

two complete-game victories for the visiting Concordia University

softball team over Vanguard in a Golden State Athletic Conference

doubleheader Saturday.

Brown limited Vanguard (15-17, 2-8 in the GSAC) to three hits in a

2-0 Concordia (22-9, 7-4) victory in the first game while the Lions

committed five errors in a 3-2 loss in Game 2.
