Sailors capture opener

The Newport Harbor High baseball team took an early lead and was able

to hang on for a 6-5 victory over visiting Ventura in the first game

of pool play in the Pride of the Coast tournament Saturday.

The Sailors scored four runs in the third inning thanks to a

two-run double by P. J. Errington and an RBI singles by Drew Harris

and Chris Thompson. Thompson also pitched the fifth inning to earn

his first victory of the season. Jeff Sanchez struck out the side in

the seventh to earn his first save.

Newport, which improves to 5-7, plays host to Costa Mesa Monday at

noon in the second round of pool play.

Errors hurt Corona del Mar in Pride opener

* Despite only allowing two earned runs, the Corona del Mar High

baseball team lost to visiting Peninsula, 8-7, Saturday in the

opening round of pool play in the Pride of the Coast tournament.

Taylor Alston went 3 for 3 with a walk as Tyler Ray and Andy

Frenkiel were both 2 for 4 for CdM (8-4).

The Sea Kings continue in pool play Monday at noon when Estancia

pays a visit.

Mesa rudely greeted at home by A.B. Miller

* A.B. Miller High’s baseball team scored the game’s final 17 runs

in a span of four innings and downed host Costa Mesa, 17-2, to open

pool play of the Pride of the Coast tournament Saturday.

The Rebels (8-3) amassed nine runs off three home runs, including

a grand slam by Wes Stone, who finished 3 for 5 with a double and

five RBIs. Stone signed with UCLA, Costa Mesa Coach Dave Austin said.

The Mustangs (6-5-1), who led, 2-0, after two innings, tallied

five hits, none after the second inning.

Alex Pisarski singled and scored on Ryan Szwast’s double in the

first while Cody Waldron singled and scored on Matt Pisarski’s single

in the second for Mesa.
