Tolfa twirls five-hitter

Sophomore pitcher Michelle Tolfa blasted two home runs while also

throwing a complete-game five-hitter to lead the Corona del Mar High

softball team past visiting Edison, 7-2, in a nonleague game Tuesday.

Tolfa was 2 for 4 at the plate, accounting for five RBIs and two

runs scored, while giving up one earned run with no walks and nine

strikeouts. She was on pace for a complete-game no-hitter, but Edison

(4-7) scored on a sacrifice fly and an error in the seventh inning.

Senior Heather Lohrman was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored,

and junior Michele Allred was 2 for 4 with a run for the Sea Kings

(9-7).

Lightning strikes

* TENNIS: The doubles play of the Sage Hill School boys tennis

team only lost two games en route to a 17-1 Academy League shellacking of host Brethren Christian Tuesday.

Doubles teammates Dan Chin and Tyler Ross, as well as Karam Sethi

and Grant Gerdau, swept their sets without losing a game, while No. 1

doubles teammates Conrad Whitaker and Michael Garrison swept for Sage

(5-5, 1-0 in league).

Both Tristan Cordier and Robert Wee also swept their singles sets

for the Lightning (5-5, 1-0 in league), ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern

Section Division V. Brethren Christian falls to 0-5, 0-1.

Sage jumps quickly

* SOFTBALL: A 10-run first inning gave the Sage Hill School

softball team a quick jump-start in a 15-9 Academy League victory

over visiting Calvary Chapel of Downey Tuesday at San Joaquin Park.

Both seniors Alex Shitanishi and Jessica Torina went 2 for 5 at

the plate for the Lightning (4-3) while Amy Penner was 2 for 4.

UCI finishes 8th

* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team tied for eighth place in the

Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate tournament that concluded Tuesday

at La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc.

UC Davis won the title of the 21-team tournament with a 54-hole

total of 879. UCI tied with UC Riverside and Hawaii for eighth place

at 900. UCI’s Garrett Sapp finished 10th at 220 (72-76-72) for his

sixth top-10 finish this year.
