Having just one week’s preparation for the Mount SAC Relays couldn’t

derail two Mesa View Middle School sprint medley relay teams from

establishing new meet records.

Mesa View’s sixth-grade boys’ and girls’ teams each ran to new

records as the Walnut meet celebrated its 20th year last weekend.

The leadoff runner in each event ran 800 meters, the second and

third legs covered 200 meters each, and the anchor ran the final

400-meter stretch.

The sixth-grade girls’ team was Elle Macy, Sarah Craig, Natalie

Bergeron and Devon Shinn.

The team set a new record at 5:09.

“Elle’s 2:43 in the 800 meters leg got us off to a great start,”

Mesa View coach Kelly Painter said. “Sarah, Natalie and Devon kept

expanding our lead.”

The sixth-grade boys’ team was in third place after John Martin’s

2:51 lead leg. Mesa View’s second and third legs, Luke Davis and Matt

O’Connor, began to gain ground in the race.

Anchor Josh Hernandez “smoked the field,” Painter said, in the

final 400 meters, and the team finished in a record time of 5:06.

Marine View seventh-grader Chelsea Breitwieser also set a new meet

record by hitting 31 feet 7 in the division’s triple-jump event.

The records were achieved during Mesa View’s first meet of the

2005 track-and-field season.

Despite not competing with much of its team -- the meet was held

during spring break -- Mesa View athletes were still able to earn

high standings.

“Although this was a small Mesa View contingent of 30

participants, I applaud these students for giving up part of their

vacation to compete,” Painter said. “Coaches Mike Vlachos and Maurice

Simmons are also to be commended.”
