Conservancy deserves scrutiny

In your March 24 edition’s “Cityscape Roundup,” you reported, “The

Bolsa Chica Conservancy has selected Louann Murray as the 2005

Conservator of the Year.” While it is agreed that Murray’s hard work

and dedication is deserving of recognition, not to mention the

enjoyment we derive each week from her column in your newspaper, is

it not time that we recognize the fact that birds of a feather stick

together?

First of all, to represent the Bolsa Chica Conservancy as an

environmentally friendly organization is a disservice to the public.

A quick review of their board of directors reveals the organization

is controlled by persons whose livelihoods are derived from the

developing and building-out of Southern California. Most prominent is

Lucy Dunn, the former vice chairwoman of Hearthside Homes, the

company that currently has an application before the California

Coastal Commission to build homes on the Bolsa Chica mesa. And their

website, which you listed in the article, specifically states their

“mission is to advocate the restoration and preservation of the Bolsa

Chica Wetlands ...” Noteworthy is the omission of any reference to

the remaining, larger open space on the adjacent mesa, equally vital

to the complete ecosystem of the Bolsa Chica. It seems that Murray

has played the game well and walked that fine line between

environmental advocacy and commercial enterprise. But the title about

to be bestowed upon her will ring hollow once the public learns the

truth about the organization recognizing her good service.

The Bolsa Chica Conservancy seems to be on a public relations

blitzkrieg lately. Could it be they sense their own demise, having

outlived their usefulness once the groundbreaking takes place on the

upper mesa?

Roll out welcome mat for MTV

The City Council should allow MTV to come to town in the summer of

2006. There is nothing different with this event from all others that

occur on our beach. I am a 40-year, lifelong resident who grew up in

Huntington Beach. I have my family and business located in the city

because it is truly a fun place to live. This would be a great way to

showcase our city and help support all the businesses. The more

exposure we get, the better our local economy will prosper. I just

hope our police and fire departments don’t try and bail on us like

they wanted to with the fireworks display.

Just say you don’t want your MTV

I have seen what MTV produces in its “Beach House” programs. They

consist only of noise, drunkenness, sex and obscenity. I do not want

the element that is attracted to such things to come to my city. I

have lived in Huntington Beach for 34 years, and I have always

enjoyed it. I own a home within earshot of loud music (only noise

really) from the vicinity of the pier.

I am 100% against this project and the problems it will bring to

this city. Do I expect our City Council to look anywhere except the

money? No.
