Roxy Beach, a locally based volleyball club, had both of its teams

win recent Junior Olympic qualifying tournaments to earn a berth in

the upcoming U.S. Junior Olympics.

The U.S. Junior Olympics will be held over the Fourth of July

weekend in Salt Lake City.

The Roxy Beach 14-1 squad won the Colorado Crossroads qualifier in

Denver, while the 15-1 squad captured the Southern California

qualifier last Sunday in Anaheim.

The 15-1 squad is coached by former Laguna Beach High boys’ head

coach James Felton and includes three freshmen -- Dana Hutchinson,

Paige Obradovich and Laurielle Hofer -- each a member of this year’s

Breakers’ girls’ volleyball squad.

The 14-1 squad is ranked No. 1 in the Southern California

Volleyball Assn. for 14s, and the 15-1 squad is ranked No. 6 among 15

and 16 squads.

In youth water polo:

The Laguna Beach “A” team captured first place at last weekend’s

Laguna Beach 8th-grade-and-under girls’ tournament.

In the title game, Laguna defeated Newport A, 6-4.

Spotting Newport a 1-0 lead, Laguna tied the match on a Taylor

Dodson goal, then with two goals scored by Lexy Ross and another by

Dodson in the second quarter, Laguna was able to open up a 4-2

halftime lead.

Arianna Ross scored late in the third quarter for Laguna’s fifth

goal, but Newport scored two goals early in the fourth quarter to

close to within 5-4.

But with Laguna playing a man up, Annika Dries fed a wide-open

Ross for a goal, which put the game out of reach.

In its first game, Laguna routed Newport B, 8-0. Dries scored two

first-period goals and finished with three goals overall to lead

Laguna.

Dodson scored twice and Ross, Ari Palmer and Dylan Conroy also

scored.

Sarah Zuziak stopped all three shots she faced in the match.

Laguna followed the win over Newport B with a 7-2 decision over

Corona del Mar.

The teams were scoreless after one quarter, and Laguna led only

1-0 at the half on a Dries goal.

Dries, Ross, Dodson and Hannah Fait all scored in the third

quarter as Laguna opened up a 5-1 lead. In the fourth period, Conroy

and Dodson scored.
