‘Art That’s Small at City Hall’ winners

“Art That’s Small at City Hall” announced its winners for the

fourth annual contest last night before First Thursdays Art Walk.

First place went to Wolfgang Bloch’s “Untitled” mixed-media piece;

second place was Tamera Thorton’s “Hot Spot” oil on board; third

place was James Koch’s “Grandpa’s Self-portrait” mixed media; City

Hall Choice went to Nancy Pace’s “Contentment” acrylic on board;

Wolfgang Bloch’s piece also won in the new Arts Commission’s Choice

category.

Honorable mention went to Michele Taylor’s “Toward Freedom” mixed

media; Stephanie Cunningham’s “Looking for Love” mixed media; Kirk

Swayne’s “Banjo Player, Mexico” photography and Karen Hedges’ “Lady

in Blue” oil on board. “Art That’s Small at City Hall” will be on

exhibit through April 29.

Festival’s ‘Art

Studio Tour’

Sawdust Art Festival’s 14th annual Art Studio Tour will be from 10

a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The tour gives a glimpse into the

lives of Laguna Beach artists through visits to private studios from

Central to North Laguna and the canyon. More than 50 artists are

scheduled to participate.

Attendees meet the artists, learn about the art and experience the

settings that inspire the artists.

Both days feature an artists’ reception from 4 to 6 p.m. with

wine, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment at the Sawdust Festival, 935

Laguna Canyon Road.

One-day tickets are $45; weekend tickets are $75. Tickets include

transportation to the studios, tours and the reception. For

Laguna Outreach’s art workshop today

Laguna Outreach Community Arts “Art Escapes” workshop will be the

third of a three-part acrylic workshop series, “Laguna Locale

Series,” taught by artist Joan Corman from 1:45 to 4 p.m. today.

Learn basic acrylic painting, with the introduction of various

techniques inspired by images of Laguna Beach. Today’s class is

exploring cottages.

The class is suitable for all artistic levels. The cost is $30,

including materials; class size is limited. The workshop is at the

2005 banner competition winners

On March 28, the City of Laguna Beach Arts Commission selected

five designs for the 2005 Banner Competition. The competition winners

are Patrick Kelly, Lynn Kubasek, Roger Folk, Jesse Miller and Amanda

Erlinger.

The banners, which are painted on both sides with original

artwork, are hung downtown during the summer. This year the Festival

of Arts donated funds to create additional banners to be exhibited on

Laguna Canyon Road leading to the Civic Arts District.

The banners will be on display from the end of May through

mid-September.

Lynn Epstein’s comedy workshop

Stand-up comic, producer and talent booker Lynn Epstein will be

teaching a Comedy Writing and Performance Workshop from 10 a.m. to 1

p.m. starting Saturday and on subsequent Saturdays.

Learn how to write original comedy, perform on stage and get

booked. Classes culminate in a Comedy Night Showcase in Laguna Beach

with students’ original performances.

New Outreach art and sea program

Laguna Outreach for Community Arts will offer, “Art and Sea

Adventures: The Art of Tide-Pooling,” in collaboration with the Ocean

Laguna Foundation.

The program includes a morning of tide-pool exploration with Ocean

Laguna Foundation docents followed by a hands-on watercolor journal

art workshop taught by Laguna Outreach for Community Arts resource

artists.

The program includes a watercolor journal, art supplies,

postcards, tote bag, refreshments and more, courtesy of Montage

Resort and Spa.

Classes are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 16 and 17; May 14 and 15.

Meet at Treasure Island Park, south entrance at South Coast Highway

at Wesley Drive, at the south edge of the Montage Resort, just below

the parking lot.

Playhouse gala to honor Struthers

The Laguna Playhouse 2005 Gala will honor Golden Globe and Emmy

Award-winning Actress Sally Struthers, who starred in the playhouse’s

2002 production “Always, Patsy Cline,” at 6 p.m. April 16 at the

Montage Resort and Spa.

“A Gala Evening in the Tropics” is a black-tie affair with dinner

and dancing. Tickets range from $25,000 VIP to $500 per person.

‘The Best of the Best of the Best’ shown

“The Best of the Best of the Best” is Laguna College of Art and

Design’s Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition with 75 pieces of

original artwork created by students at each level exhibiting works

that represent drawing and painting, illustration, graphic design,

animation and sculpture.

The exhibition is on display through May 3 at Laguna College, 2222

Laguna Canyon Road and offers complimentary parking. For information,

Sculpture contest deadline nearing

The Laguna Beach Arts Commission will hold a sculpture competition

to add to the city’s public art collection.

The art will be located at the Village Green Park at the corner of

Monterey Street and Catalina Avenue.

The subject should be inspired by nature and should be figurative.

A vertical orientation is recommended. The piece must be no larger

than 5 feet wide and deep by a maximum of 7 feet tall.

Only original artwork that may not be reproduced should be

submitted. Honorarium is $10,000. Deadline is April 29. For

Woman’s Club fourth annual art show

The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach will hold its fourth annual Women

Artist’s Art Auction, Show and Sale from 3 to 6 p.m. April 17 and 24.

The event showcases the talents of local women artists. Many media

will be exhibited. Each work has been individually crafted and is

original.

Both days will feature a silent auction of the donated artwork to

help provide a venue for the work of new and emerging local women

artists. Attendance is free. Refreshments will be available. The

Woman’s Club is at 286 St. Ann’s Drive.

Chamber Music Festival coming soon

Laguna Beach Live!, in collaboration with the Philharmonic Society

of Orange County and Laguna Chamber Music Society, will have its

third annual Laguna Beach Chamber Music Festival April 13 through

April 17.

Pianist Christopher O’Riley is the 2005 Distinguished Mentor

Musician.

The festival will offer education, performances and events, with

concerts at 8 p.m. April 15 and April 16 and at 3 p.m. April 25 at

the Artists’ Theatre. Free educational events include watching

coaching sessions, open rehearsals and a discussion by O’Riley at

6:30 p.m. April 14 at Laguna Art Museum. A master class will be at 1

p.m. April 15 at Laguna Beach Artists’ Theatre.

Joining Christopher O’Riley this year are cellist Abraham Feder,

violinist Bella Hristova and Yao Guang Zhia on clarinet.

‘Playshop’ given by artist Cherril Doty

Artist and creative life coach Cherril Doty will be offering an

opportunity to play and explore personal creative processes. The

class is for everyone.

The end result is in the form of the human figure, a doll. The

Playhouse extends popular show

As a result of continued popular demand, the Laguna Playhouse, 606

Laguna Canyon Road, will extend its run of “Late Nite Catechism”

through June 20, for the 13th time.
