Growth through time lifting Holmes

Trevor Holmes has grown quite a bit since he was the starting setter

for the Estancia High boys volleyball team in 2002.

There is the obvious physical growth that differentiates a

15-year-old from an 18-year-old.

“He has literally grown a foot,” Coach Tracey Ingraham said. “He

was always a phenomenal setter as far as his hands, but we had to sub

him out when he was in the front row so we could get a blocker in

there. It obviously helps to have him in there for the entire

rotation. It gives consistency for the hitters.”

Now at 6-foot-1, Holmes is a threat in the front row as a blocker

and also to dump any high passes over the net.

“[Dumps] have always been there for me,” he said. “Coach has never

been against it. She told me that if it’s open, take it. [Being

taller] has helped me improve. I can get sets that are right on top

of net.”

Ingraham said, “A setter usually gets one kill in a game for

dumps. He got up to eight kills, which is crazy. He’s become a threat

as an attacker.”

Holmes’ total growth is something that can’t be measured in feet

and inches. He has matured into a senior captain, leading the CIF

Southern Section Division III defending champions to an 11-6 record

and 5-0 in the Golden West League. Holmes registered 23 assists in

the Eagles’ four-game victory over crosstown rival Costa Mesa last

week to earn Daily Pilot Athlete of the Week honors.

“I’m really trying to keep things how we did last year with the

same warm up because if we did it last year it should work this

year,” Holmes said. “We lost some key players but the up-and-coming

juniors we have will make it a fun [season]. We’re already looking

toward CIF [playoffs]. That’s where I think we need to be, in CIF.”

The growth from a quite freshman to a senior captain has Holmes’

coach happy.

“He has really become a leader this year,” Ingraham said. “He is

the key element of team. I can’t say enough good things about him.”
