UCI women roll past Davis

UC Irvine’s women’s tennis team swept through visiting UC Davis, 7-0,

in a nonconference match Saturday.

The Anteaters (11-9), winners of seven of their last nine, swept

all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and received

strong singles performances from Anna Bentzer, who handled Audrey

Wingo, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot, and Becky Bernhard, who defeated

Ashley Lehman, 6-1, 6-1.

UCI plays its final regular season match against Big West

Conference foe and host UC Riverside at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Shaw soars for Lions

* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University senior Brandon Shaw

finished second in the fast section of the men’s 800 meters Saturday

at Azusa Pacific University’s Meet of Champions.

Shaw’s time of 1:50.61 was a season best and easily earned him an

automatic qualifying berth for the NAIA Outdoor Nationals. The

automatic standard is 1:53.00. Shaw joins five other Lions, Matt

Meyer, Christol McDonald, Jenny Thune, Elizabeth Huipe and Laura

Bowman, who have already qualified for the Outdoor Nationals.

Anteaters have seconds

* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine’s Kim Ramirez and Ricky Barnes earned

second-place finishes in the Brutus Hamilton Track & Field

Invitational at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field in Berkeley, Calif.,

Saturday.

Ramirez, a senior, was runner-up in the 1,500 meters with a time

of 4:26.15, the seventh-fastest mark in UCI history.

Barnes, a junior, was second in the 5,000 in 14:31.65.

UCI’s Amber Nefas finished third in the 400 (57.68), Candice

Proctor was fourth in the 5,000 (18:03.31), Suzanne Purmort placed

fourth in the 400 hurdles (64.01), Danielle St. John was fifth in the

high jump (5 feet, 5 3/4 inches) and Kirsten Loftin was sixth in

the pole vault at 11-5 3/4 .

The Anteaters gained seventh-place finishes by Randi Houston in

the 100 (12.83), Erinn Kim in the 5,000 (18:12.72), Kelli Vanderburg

in the 3,000 steeplechase (11:38.47) and Orlisha Henlon in the high

jump (5-3 3/4 ).

In other men’s competition, the Anteaters’ Tom Whelan was fifth in

the mile (4:09.47) and John Wratten finished fifth in the high jump

at 6-8 3/4 .

Matadors strong at end

* VOLLEYBALL: Despite career highs in kills for Jayson Jablonsky

(25) and Matt Webber (24) the UC Irvine men’s volleyball team fell to

visiting Cal State Northridge, 27-30, 30-26, 30-27, 30-21, in a

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Saturday.

Nils Nielsen led the Matadors (16-12, 9-11 in the MPSF) with 22

kills while Brandon Mel added 12 digs for the Anteaters (8-19, 6-14),

who fell out of playoff contention with the loss.

Northridge hit at a .542 clip in the fourth game while UCI managed

just .161.

Coast men sweep

* ROWING: Orange Coast College’s men’s rowing team swept four

races in a meet that included Long Beach State, UC Irvine and Chapman

University held in North Lido Channel Saturday.

OCC won the varsity eight race in 6:39 while UCI placed second in

6:47. Coxswain Candice Matheny, along with Komron Azizi, Elliott

Hayes, Stephen Edmunds, Samuel Proctor, Val Stepanchuk, Jeff Baitx,

Jordan Fissel and David Krueger, comprised Coast’s winning team.

Coast also won the 2,000-meter race in 6:42 in a stiff headwind

while the novice four team crossed in 8:08 and the junior varsity

finished in 7:19, ahead of UCI’s 7:46.

On the women’s side, OCC claimed the novice four and novice eight

races in 9:28 and 8:21, respectively.

UCI edged the OCC women in the Collins Cup varsity race by four

seconds, winning in 8:06.

Trojans down’Eaters

* WATER POLO: Five players scored two goals each as the

second-ranked USC women’s water polo team downed visiting UC Irvine,

11-5, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Saturday.

USC (17-3, 8-1 in the MPSF) outscored UCI, 6-0, in the second

period.

Robyn Kaake led UCI (11-11, 4-7) with four goals while Karly

Tivenan added one. Lauren Machanis made seven saves in net for the

Anteaters.

CdM duo honored

* BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar High junior Katie Schulte has been

selected to the first-team All-Pacific Coast League basketball team

by the circuit’s coaches.

Sophomore point guard Allie Duernberger was selected to the second

team.

Schulte, a 5-foot-6 guard, averaged 13.2 points per game and

scored more than 20 points on six occasions, including a season-high

30 Feb. 8 in CdM’s upset over league champion Laguna Beach.

Duernberger, a 5-5 point guard, led the Sea Kings with 127 assists

and was tied for the team lead with Schulte with 16 three-point

baskets.

Claire Bevacqua from Laguna Beach was named the Most Valuable

Player.

Wright among top 100

* GOLF: David Wright, formerly an instructor at Pelican Hill Golf

Club in Newport Coast, has been named a Top 100 Instructor by Golf

Magazine.

Wright, a two-time Southern California PGA Teacher of the Year,

left his post at Pelican Dec. 1 and now conducts golf schools and

individual lessons at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, designed by Costa

Mesa resident Casey O’Callaghan, in Mission Viejo.

Wright has worked with more than 100 tour players worldwide

including Costa Mesa High product Dennis Paulson.

Stone ranked 17th

* ROWING: Stephanie Stone is ranked No. 17 in the world for the

girls 13-18 division in the 2,000 meters. Stone, a 14-year old with the Newport Aquatic Center, posted a time of seven minutes, 16

seconds. She is No. 11 in that age group in the USA.

That time ranks her 104 in the world for all ages and 69 for all

ages in the country.

Eight ‘Eaters honored

* ACADEMICS: Eight UC Irvine student-athletes have earned Academic

All-Big West Conference honors for winter sports.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, student-athletes have to

maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average, have attained a

sophomore standing academically and competed in at least 50 percent

of their team’s contests.

UCI’s honorees are men’s basketball players Jeff Gloger (political

science) and Ross Schraeder (sociology), women’s basketball player

Joanna Usher (economics), and women’s swimmers Megan Baker

(psychology & social behavior), Serena Butler (biological sciences),

Kim Do (applied ecology), Michelle Kumaus (criminology) and Abby Zern

(psychology).

The Anteater selections were among a total of 83 student-athletes

from the 10 member institutions who received the honor for the winter

sports of men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s

swimming and diving.
