Party’s over, El Morro folks

It is simply good manners for a guest to know when the party is over

and that it’s time to leave. The same could be said about the

residents of El Morro Village mobile-home park who have packed up the

contents of their beachfront trailers and moved on.

After more than 25 years of extensions on the leases of this

publicly owned parkland, about two dozen of El Morro’s nearly 300

residents chose to honor the April 1 deadline and move out rather

than continue fighting eviction.

That is commendable and something their former El Morro neighbors

would do well to emulate.

Once the trailers are vacant, the state plans to convert El Morro

-- which has belonged to all Californians since 1979 -- into

campgrounds, picnic areas and parking. It would be an absolute jewel

in the state park system.

However, many at El Morro have chosen to remain firmly entrenched,

trying to keep this prime piece of the oceanfront pie for themselves,

just as it has been for years and years and years.

And that’s a shame.

They should realize the party is over and that it’s time to go.
