CdM has first trio

Six Corona del Mar High boys soccer players have been selected to the

All-Pacific Coast League team by the circuit’s coaches.

Seniors Shane Collins, Grant Almquist and Brandon Barrett were

first-team honorees while senior Nick Ossipoff and juniors Andrew

Dialynas and Paul Kenezevic were named to the second team.

The Sea Kings finished third in league with a 9-6-4 record and

were 5-2-2 in league.

Eagles roll on in sweep

* VOLLEYBALL: Passing and ball control was a key factor in the

Estancia High boys volleyball team win over host Saddleback

Wednesday.

Estancia defeated the Roadrunners, 25-16, 25-19, 25-15, as Dallas

Kopp held down the middle with 13 kills to go along with three aces.

Scott Markley contributed 11 kills and Trevor Holmes had 23

assists.

The Eagles (12-6, 6-0 in league) remain undefeated in league as

they head into the second round of league matches beginning Friday

against Orange.

Sailor boys win

* SWIMMING: The Newport Harbor High boys swim team slid past

Foothill in a 89-81 Sea View League Victory, while the girls fell,

96-74, Wednesday.

Clay Jorth was a double winner for the boys in the 200-yard

freestyle (1:49.13) and in the 500 free (5:02.19).

Kally Lucas and James Jackson had two first-place finishes in the

200 free (2:03.01), 500 free (5:28.77), 100 back (57.55) and 200

individual medley (2:07.40), respectively.

Eagles on cruise control

* TENNIS: Estancia High’s boys tennis team pulled out a 13-5

Golden West League victory over host Saddleback Wednesday to remain

tied for second in league with Costa Mesa.

Freshman Bradley Fisher swept his sets at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1,

6-0, for the Eagles (6-6, 5-2 in league), while the doubles team of

junior Chris Alvergue and senior Cesar Gonzalez swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-3.

No. 1 singles player Scott Braunsdorf won two sets for Estancia,

which visits Ocean View at 3:15 p.m. today.

Estancia trumps foe

* SOFTBALL: Taylor Brown went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs

scored while Kiele Brown also tallied three hits and three RBIs to

power the visiting Estancia High softball team to a 13-1 Golden West League victory over Saddleback Wednesday.

Muriel Mason, who struck out five in improving to 6-2, had a

no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning before

Saddleback (3-6, 0-3 in league) strung three hits together.

Estancia improved to 8-4, 1-1.

Miner scores two

* BASEBALL: Greg Miner was 2 for 4 with one RBI and two runs

scored in Newport Harbor’s 11-3 Sea View League victory over visiting

Laguna Hills Wednesday.

Newport Harbor led by five in the fourth inning, but the Hawks

came within two in the fifth.

In the fifth inning the Sea Kings scored six runs to secure the

victory.

Newport Harbor’s Chris Thompson was 2 for 4 with one RBI and one

run.

Coast women move on

* TENNIS: Three singles players and two doubles teams from Orange

Coast College reached the quarterfinals through action Tuesday in the

Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis tournament at Cypress

College.

Top-seeded Michelle Esquivel lost just two games in sweeping her

first two opponents while Coast teammates Emily Paulson, who gave up

just one game, and Jessica Rice, the No. 3 seed, defeated their first

two opponents in straight sets. The trio advance to Friday’s

quarterfinals.

On the doubles side, the top-seeded duo of Esquivel and Rice,

along with teammates Paulson and Rachel Sessum, also advanced to

Friday’s quarterfinals after notching victories.

Semifinals and finals in both singles and doubles are scheduled

for Saturday.

UCI topples Tritons

* VOLLEYBALL: Paced by Jayson Jablonsky’s match-high 19 kills and

Steffin Rangel’s 15 kills, the UC Irvine men’s volleyball team swept

host UC San Diego, 30-25, 30-27, 30-21, in Mountain Pacific Sports

Federation action Wednesday in La Jolla.

David Smith added six kills for the Anteaters (9-19, 7-14 in the

MPSF) while Brian Thornton tallied 37 assists at the setter position.

Matt Webber, Dillon Fitch, Brett Simpson and Smith all nailed aces

for UCI.

UCSD falls to 2-23, 1-20.

Estancia is bested

* BASEBALL: Two days after achieving its first win of the season,

the Estancia High baseball team lost to host Saddleback, 13-7, in

Golden West League play Wednesday.

Junior Kane Curran was 2 for 3 at the plate with three RBIs and a

run scored for the Eagles (1-13, 1-3 in league), while senior Dustin

Stone was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Junior Michael McDaniels was 2 for 4

with an RBI and a run scored.

Lions fall to Eagles

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team fell, 5-1, in a

Golden State Athletic Conference game against Concordia Wednesday.

Concordia led, 3-0, in the second inning, but Vanguard’s Joe

Candelaria scored twice to bring the Lions within three.

A Concordia run in the sixth ended the game, dropping Vanguard to

12-22, 8-12 in GSAC.

OCC falls in 5

* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team fell

to Golden West, 26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13, in an Orange Empire Conference loss to Golden West Wednesday.

OCC (6-10, 3-5 in OEC) took the second game, 25-23, after taking

an early 17-9 lead, but lost the third, 25-22.

In the fourth game OCC’s Scott Sankey had seven of his 16 kills.

The Pirates fell, 15-13, in the fifth game while Josh Kornegay

finished with 12 kills, and Drew Ginther had 51 assists.

Coast drops two

* GOLF: Sophomore Jason Cassidy shot a 2-over-par 74 while

teammate Justin Gray carded a 76 for the Orange Coast College men’s

golf team, which suffered two losses to visiting Orange Empire

Conference foes Palomar and Irvine Valley in a match Wednesday at

Santa Ana Country Club.

Peter Baker shot 77 while Andrew Fluor (78) and Chris Larsen (79)

scored for OCC (3-12 overall and in the OEC), which finished at 384.

Palomar won with 375 while Irvine Valley tallied 380.

Coast makes grade

Orange Coast College publicly released its athletic grade point

averages from 11 fall and winter teams, showing the squads not only

succeeded on the athletic field, they also performed well in the

classroom.

Overall, OCC’s athletics had a combined GPA of 2.82, while three

teams had a combined GPA of more than 3.0.

Mike Thornton’s women’s basketball team, which finished 17-13 and

reached the Southern California regional playoffs, averaged a 3.35

and Don Watson’s women’s water polo team finished 19-9 with a 3.12.

The state champion women’s cross country team had a 2.98 average

while the men combined for a 2.65.

The women’s soccer team, which finished, 13-5-3, averaged a 2.87,

and the 15-6 women’s volleyball team pulled in a 2.75.
