Win, lose some

The Firefighters of Laguna Beach Little League showed little mercy to

the San Juan Capistrano Marlins in their Senior League game at Alta

Laguna Park.

Scoring early and often in a game that ultimately was called by

the visiting coach, the Firefighters posted a 14-0 shutout victory.

Offensive highlights for the Firefighters included Kyle Snyder

walking twice and scoring on both occasions in the first and second

innings; Sean Pigden with two singles; Casey Miller, Logan Schoembs

and Ryan Raffo each getting on base; Paul Salomon with a single and

powerful triple to deep centerfield; Jason Swinden with a single and

double; and Flip Shusko with a single.

Shusko threw two innings of shutout ball.

With the Firefighters in command and in the middle of a big rally

in the bottom of the second inning, the Marlins’ manager called an

end to the game.

Angels 5, Firefighters 2

The Firefighters fell behind early and couldn’t catch up to the

host San Clemente Angels on a cold night at San Gorgonio Field.

While the Firefighters failed to find any offensive rhythm in the

first five innings, the Angels came out firing right away.

San Clemente scored three runs in the first inning to take control

at 3-0.

The Firefighters finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the

sixth, a rally that produced two runs to cut the gap to 5-2.

Logan Schoembs and Sean Pigden had the only hits for Laguna Beach.

Raphael Vickers had five strikeouts in four innings and Ryan Raffo

struck out one in two innings.

Gabe Stansbury had a solid game behind the plate with good

defensive plays by Jackson Christy, Casey Miller, and Brenden

Ferguson.
