Doyle earns spot on national team

Costa Mesa resident Eric Doyle has been named to the 2005 United

States sailing team as a member of the Star class.

The U.S. team annually selects the top-five-ranked sailors in each

of the boat classes for the next Olympic competition.

For the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, those classes are

49er, 470 (men and women), Finn, Laser, Laser Radial, RS:X (men and

women), Star, Tornado and Yngling.

Doyle is ranked No. 5 in the Star class.

Rankings on the U.S. team are based on attendance and performance

at qualifying events.

The U.S. sailing team was created in 1986 to recruit and develop

top sailors in the country for the Olympics.

Area teams stand out

* SAILING: Sailors from Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar high

schools sparkled at a pair of competitions at separate sites

Saturday.

Newport Harbor was second and CdM fourth in the team standings at

the Pacific Coast championships, hosted by Encina Yacht Club in

Alameda, Calif.

The two-day event was won by Point Loma High from San Diego.

The Newport Harbor team consisted of Charlie Buckingham and Marla

Menninger sailing in the “A” Division, as well as Matt Hogan

competing with alternating crews Blair Belling and Carly Chamberlain

in the “B” Division.

The Sailors’ roster also included Cole Hatton, Michael Menninger

and Taylor Grimes.

The CdM team included Peter Stemler with alternating crews Hadley

Rokicki and Peter Tucci in the “A” Division, as well as Reid

Vitarelli with alternating crews Alexandra Dunlap and Andrew Mason in

the “B” Division.

The Sea Kings’ roster was rounded out by Christine Burke, and Ryan

Pawell.

Newport Harbor and CdM finished first and second, respectively, at

the Silver Pacific Coast championships, in Coronado.

Sage Hill School finished fourth.

Phil Houton and Ainsley Buie represented Newport Harbor in the “A”

Division, while Dane Butera and Phillip Ruppert competed in the “B”

Division for the Tars.

Peter Yould and Geoff Machin represented CdM in the “A” Division,

while Max Rollins and Brett Bartlett manned the CdM boat in the “B”

Division.

Jeff Cruttenden and Karly Bennett competed in the “A” Division for

Sage Hill, for which Max Moosman and Michael Trombatore compete in

the “B” Division.

Newport and CdM will sail for the Mallory Trophy at the national

high school championship, scheduled May 14-15 in Port Angeles, Wash.

Eagles top Seahawks

* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team remained

perfect in the Golden West League with a 21-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16,

victory over host Ocean View Monday.

The Eagles (14-6, 8-0 in league) are ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern

Section Division III.

Mustangs best Lions

* GOLF: The Costa Mesa High boys golf team beat Westminster,

220-250, for the Mustangs’ first Golden West League victory of the

season Monday at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Senior Robert Angle was the medalist, shooting 3-over-par 38.

Sophomore Garrick Vohs (43), senior Joey Freeman (44), freshman Eddie

Rodriguez (46) and senior Troy Wright (48) all broke 50 for Costa

Mesa (4-9, 1-4) in league.

Pirates defeat Tigers

* GOLF: The Orange Coast College men’s golf team defeated host

Riverside, 393-396, in an Orange Empire Conference match Monday at

the Victoria Club in Riverside.

OCC sophomore Jason Cassidy, an Estancia High product, shot par 72

to pace the winners, who improved to 4-12, all conference matches.

Justin Gray (76), Peter Baker (79), Gilbert Jalamo (81) and Chris

Larsen (85) also scored for Coach Barry Wallace’s Orange Coast squad.

Anteaters finish 12th

* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team tied for 12th in the U.S.

Intercollegiate tournament that concluded Sunday at the Stanford

University Golf Course.

UCI freshman Kenny Kim was 18th with a 54-hole total of 217

(70-74-73).

Freshman Garrett Sapp (76-73-74) and junior Jay Choe (76-71-76)

finished 39th at 223, sophomore Brian Edick was 54th (73-75-77--225),

and senior Nate Yates was 90th at 244.

USC won the 18-team tournament with score of 846.

UCI and Cal both shot 888.
