Homer propels OCC

Stephen Schneider gave the Orange Coast College baseball team a

second consecutive game-winning solo home run to edge visiting Irvine

Valley, 12-11, Thursday in Orange Empire Conference play.

Luke Beck stole third in the ninth inning and came home on the

errant throw to third, tying it at 11, and setting the stage for

Schneider. With a 3-and-0 count, he sent reliever Grant Harrell’s

pitch over the right-field fence for the victory. Beck also provided

the game-winning homer against Saddleback Tuesday.

Beck finished 4 for 5 at the plate for the Pirates (19-13-1,

10-5-1 in the OEC) Thursday, a career-best outing with three doubles,

three runs scored and two RBIs. Matt Meadows was 2 for 4 with a

two-run home run and four RBIs in his first start in nearly two

months after sitting out with a fractured leg.

Area players moving on

* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High senior Wesley Miller, as well as CdM

senior partners Matt Chou and Spencer Reitz, won first- and

second-round matches, respectively, in the CIF boys singles and

doubles divisions Thursday, four of several victories for

Newport-Mesa players in various divisions who advanced in the 105th

annual Ojai Valley tennis tournament.

Miller defeated Jenson Turner of Campbell Hall, 6-2, 6-2, in the

first round, before handling Michael Eraso of Sunny Hills, 6-1, 6-4,

in the second round.

Miller competes in the Round of 16 today at 8 a.m. at Thatcher

School. If victorious, he would play in the quarterfinals, scheduled

for 12:30 p.m.

Chou and Reitz knocked off Rashid Rahman and Daniel Sagaf from

Taft High, 6-1, 6-1, before defeating Alok Chandick and Alan Estareja

from Redlands, 6-4, 6-1.

They advance to today’s Round of 16, also at Thatcher School.

In girls 18s singles, Newport Harbor High junior Megan McKay won

twice, the latter a victory against Evelyn Wallace of Costa Mesa,

6-2, 6-4, to reach today’s Round of 16 against Olivia Colman of Los

Angeles at 11 a.m. today at Thatcher School.

Newport Harbor sophomore Jake Fleming downed Costa Mesa resident

Charlie Alvarado, 6-1, 6-1, to reach the Round of 16 in boys 16s

singles, where he faces Nicolas Patonai at 9:30 a.m. today at

Nordhoff High.

Corona del Mar freshman Alexandra Walters downed Sutton Anderson

of Breckenridge, Colo., 6-0, 6-1, to advance to today’s Round of 16

in girls 16s singles. Walters faces Brooklyn resident Gail Brandsky

at 8 a.m. at Villanova School.

Newport Beach’s Parker Rhodes defeated Costa Mesa’s Charlie Corum,

6-0, 6-0, in the Round of 32 in boys 14s singles and faces Clay

Thompson of Venice in at 9:30 a.m. today at the Ojai Valley School.

The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team took two second round

singles wins, along with three doubles victories.

In the second round of singles, Jessica Rice defeated Shama

Hussain of Consumnes River, 6-0, 6-1, while Michelle Esquivel

defeated Evetta Nettles from El Camino, 6-0, 6-0.

In the first round of doubles, Emily Paulson and Rachael Sessum

defeated Kalie He and Allison Nelson of Imperial Valley, 6-0, 6-0,

then downed Sherry Leuthold and Jessica Thomas of Mount San Jacinto,

6-1, 6-3.

In the second round of doubles, Esquivel and Rice defeated Hussain

and Amanda Wingo of Consumnes River, 6-0, 6-1.

In the men’s community college doubles draw, OCC’s Colby Morita

and Spencer Solomon defeated a team from Long Beach City, 6-0, 6-0,

and face Chris Cota and Mike Palacio of Imperial Valley at 12:30 p.m.

today at the Oxnard Tennis Center.

CdM stays undefeated

* TRACK AND FIELD: The Corona del Mar High girls track and field

team remains undefeated in the Pacific Coast League after a 86-41

victory over visiting Tesoro, while the Sea King boys won, 88-39,

Thursday.

The boys swept six events: the 800-, 1,600-, 3,200-meter races,

along with the high jump, shot put, and discus.

Melissa Swigert was a double winner for the girls, winning the 100

in 12.1 and the 200 in 25.3.

Tiffany Liu won three events, including the 100 high hurdles (16.1), long jump (16 feet) and triple jump with 33-10.

The girls team swept the 1,600 and 3,200.

Estancia downs Mesa

* GOLF: The Estancia High boys golf team defeated Golden West

League rival Costa Mesa, 192-234, at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club

Thursday.

The Eagles (11-8, 7-0 in league) were led by medalist Garrett

McMasters, who shot 37. Pat Flannery (38), Ben Schramm (38), Austin

Serr (39) and Greg Les (40) also competed.

Three Sailors win

* GOLF: Spencer Quinn, Rhett Palmer and Paul Nes all shot

2-over-par 38, marking a three-way tie for medalist honors in Newport

Harbor High’s boys golf team’s 196-233 Sea View League win over

visiting Irvine Thursday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Quinn tallied three birdies while Palmer had two and Nes one as

the Sailors improved to 10-8, 5-3 in league. Senior Davis Pemstein

shot 39 and sophomore Justin Morehead shot 43.

The Sailors visit Laguna Hills at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Laguna Woods

Golf Club.

Estancia cruises to win

* TENNIS: Junior Scott Braunsdorf and freshman Bradley Fisher

swept their sets at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to lead the

Estancia High boys tennis team to a 13-5 Golden West League victory

over visiting Saddleback Thursday.

Braunsdorf swept without losing a game while Fisher lost just one

game for the Eagles (9-6, 8-2 in league). Junior Andy Nelson won two

sets at No. 3 singles.

Sage blanks first foe

* TENNIS: Freshmen Karam Sethi and Nicolas Russo-Larson each

didn’t lose a game in sweeping their singles sets as the host Sage

Hill School boys tennis team defeated Brethren Christian, 18-0 in an

Academy League match Thursday at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

The Lightning improved to 10-6, 6-1 in league).

Robert Wee also swept in singles, while the duo of Dan Chin and

Tyler Ross won three times.

Sailor girls win big

* TRACK AND FIELD: The Newport Harbor High girls track and field

team dominated over Laguna Hills in a 93-49 victory, while the boys

fell, 70-66, in a Sea View League meet Thursday.

The girls were led by Jessica Robson, who finished first in the

long jump (34 feet, 10 inches) and triple jump (5-0).

The girls the 400 meters, the 1,600, triple jump and discus.

Nick St. Andre finished in first for the Sea Kings in the 800

(2:04.2), 1,600 (4:39.5) and 3,200 (10:17.7).

The boys swept in the high jump, shot put and discus.

Alex Boullon won the high jump with 20-1, while Trevor Theriot won

shot put (55-4) and Bo Taylor won discus (175-5).

Tars’ errors costly

* SOFTBALL: Host Newport Harbor High had twice as many hits as

Foothill, but two fifth-inning errors led to three unearned runs in

the Knights’ 3-0 Sea View League softball victory Thursday.

Newport Harbor senior pitcher Ashley Gleason allowed just two hits

-- leadoff singles in the fifth and seventh -- and went 2 for 3 to

account for half of the Tars’ four-hit attack.

Junior left fielder Katie Daniels was also 2 for 3 for the Sailors

(13-6-1, 2-2 in league).

Pirates conclude season

* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s volleyball team lost,

20-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 15-12, to visiting Palomar in Orange

Empire Conference play Wednesday.
