Wilson teacher earns

Excellence Award

A Wilson Elementary School second-grade teacher has won the Vision

for Excellence Award this year for her unique marine biology program.

Sandra Kaszynski, who has taught at Wilson for six years, will

receive a $1,000 check toward her school’s science program Wednesday

at a ceremony on campus. On May 6, she will receive a personal award

of $5,000 at a lunch at the Pacific Club in Costa Mesa.

The Vision for Excellence Award is sponsored by Project Tomorrow,

a nonprofit group that promotes and enhances science education in

Orange County public schools. Kaszynski won in the elementary teacher

category for her work at Wilson, one of the least affluent sites in

the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Nearly all of the students

at Wilson are English-language learners, with some of Kaszynski’s

students coming from homeless shelters.

Kaszynski’s marine biology unit encompasses math, writing and

science . students have drawn life-size whales in chalk on the

playground and gone on whale-watching trips.

“Sandy is committed to making science come alive daily, not only

for her students but her teaching peers as well,” said Marcia

Encinas, the district’s science and math coordinator.
