Michelle Esquivel, fresh off her singles win at last weekend’s Ojai

Valley tennis tournament, improved to 26-0 this season with 6-0, 6-0

victories Tuesday to help the second-seeded Orange Coast College

women’s tennis team earn a 5-0 victory over visiting Cerritos in the

Southern California dual-team semifinals Tuesday.

The victory puts Coast (15-1) against either top-seeded Saddleback

or El Camino Tuesday in the final, with the winner advancing to face

the Northern California champion.

Emily Paulson, Julie Haley and Ai Takamori all swept their singles

matches for the Pirates.

Sea Kings rolling

* TENNIS: Senior Wesley Miller improved to 21-0 in dual matches

while freshman Fabian Mathews improved to 21-3 as both Corona del Mar

High boys tennis players swept their sets in a 16-2 Pacific Coast

League victory over host Northwood Tuesday.

The Sea Kings (14-1, 6-0 in league) remain perfect in dual

matches.

Doubles -- Nguyen-Pham lost Gassin-Phan, 6-4, def. Nguyen-Sigler,

6-3, def. Lin-Doan, 6-2; Reitz-Leonard (CdM) won, 6-4, lost, 7-5,

won, 6-2; Kroopf-Tat (CdM) won, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

UCI ties for third

* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team tied for third place with

Idaho in the Big West Conference Championships that concluded Tuesday

at Tijeras Creek Golf Club.

UCI sophomore Brian Edick finished eighth at even-par 216

(74-70-72) while freshman Kenny Kim was 12th at 217 (77-69-71).

Freshman Garrett Sapp placed 16th at 219 (73-71-75), junior Jay

Choe was 26th at 223 (80-70-73) and junior Ryne Rindfleisch finished

45th at 240 (80-81-79).

Sapp was named first team All-Big West for the season and Edick

earned second-team honors.

UC Riverside won the title with a 54-hole score of 852. Cal Poly’s

Travis Bertoni was the medalist with a three-round score of 9-under

207 (66-71-70).

CdM still unbeaten

* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball defeated

host Northwood, 25-13, 25-6, 25-23, Tuesday in a Pacific Coast League

match.

Tom Welch led CdM (21-5, 7-0 in league) with 10 kills while

freshman middle blocker Gus Ellis finished with six kills. Tom’s twin

brother, Kevin Welch, finished with five kills, three service aces

and eight digs.

Phil Bannan (17 assists) and Grant Almquist (14 assists) shared

setter duty.

Eagles win again

* TENNIS: Bradley Fisher improved to 31-2 on the season while

Scott Braunsdorf and Andy Nelson also swept in singles to lead the

host Estancia High boys tennis team to a 17-1 Golden West League

victory Tuesday.

Braunsdorf improved to 30-3 with three victories while the doubles

duos of David Do and Chase Raymond, along with Shane Thompson and

Mike Fennessey each swept their respective doubles matches for the

Eagles (10-6, 9-2 in league), winners of six straight.

Estancia hosts crosstown rival Costa Mesa, also 9-2 in league, for

second place in league at 3 p.m. Thursday to conclude the regular

season.

CdM explodes in 6th

* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team put up seven

runs in the sixth inning to mercy host Laguna Beach, 12-2, Tuesday in a Pacific Coast League game.

Michelle Tolfa picked up her 13th win of the season by pitching

the first three innings. She helped her own cause by going 4 for 4 at

the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored and three stolen bases.

CdM (13-8, 4-2 in league) plays at Northwood Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Tars keep winning

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team remains

undefeated in the Sea View League after disposing of host Aliso

Niguel, 25-23, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19, Tuesday.

The win came at a price, though, as starting setter Ted Slater was

taken to the hospital for stitches after cutting his chin midway

through the second game while diving for a ball.

It is unknown if the injury will keep him out of the lineup.

Brett Auer led the Sailors (14-11, 7-0 in league) with 15 kills,

followed by Brett Perrine’s 12 kills.

CdM seeking first

* BASEBALL: Corona del Mar High’s baseball team scored three runs

in both the first and third innings and went on to defeat visiting

Laguna Beach, 8-1, Tuesday in Pacific Coast League action to remain

one game of first-place Tesoro.

Senior Ben Maggard tossed four innings with three strikeouts, four

hits and a walk in improving to 5-2, while Jake Lemmerman was 2 for 3

at the plate with two RBIs. Taylor Alston was 1 for 2 with two RBIs

and R.J. Duernberger was 2 for 3 with an RBI for CdM (15-5, 8-2 in

league).

Sailors’ singles sweep

* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High boys tennis team defeated

visiting Irvine, 16-2, Tuesday in a Sea View League match.

Jake Fleming, Dylan Espley-Jones and John Hutchinson did not lose

a set in singles for the Sailors as Derek Davis and Brandon Chase did

not lose a set in No. 3 doubles.

Newport Harbor (5-8, 4-4 in league) plays Foothill today at 3 p.m.

at Tustin Hill Racqet Club.

CdM ekes out win

* GOLF: Matt Story shot 1-over par 36 to lead the Corona del Mar

High boys golf team to a 194-198 Pacific Coast League victory over

visiting Northwood Tuesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

The combination of Story, David Su (38), Ben Tilsen (39), Zach

Rabinovich (41) and Cody Stuart (41) helped the Sea Kings (7-6, 5-4

in league) remain in the fourth league spot, with the top four teams

qualifying for the CIF Southern Section postseason.

Eagle pair qualify

* SWIMMING: Chad Kunert and Andrew Fassari swam automatic CIF

qualifying times in the 500-yard freestyle to help the host Estancia

High boys swim team defeat Savanna, 89-65, Tuesday in a nonleague

dual meet.

Kunert’s 5:09.6 and Fassari’s 5:09.88 were both well under the

5:11.00 automatic time. Kunert also won the 200 free (2:01.27) and

Fassari claimed the 100 backstroke (1:02.01) for Estancia (5-6, 2-3

in league).

Quinn cards 2-under

* GOLF: Junior Spencer Quinn carded a 2-under par 34 to earn

medalist honors and lead the visiting Newport Harbor High boys golf

team past Laguna Hills, 182-200, in Sea View League play Tuesday at

Laguna Woods Golf Club.

Quinn tallied three birdies and a bogey while Brandon Sowers (35),

Davis Pemstein (35), Chris Willard (39) and Rhett Palmer (39) helped

the Sailors (11-8, 6-3 in league) mark their lowest score of the

year.

Newport hosts Woodbridge at 3 p.m. Thursday at Big Canyon Country

Club.

Sage clinches second

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School boys tennis team clinched second

place in the Academy League with its 12-6 win over host St.

Margaret’s Tuesday.

The Sage Hill doubles teams did not lose a set while No. 1 singles

player Martin Park won two of his three sets.

Freeman feels it

* GOLF: Senior Joe Freeman shot a personal-best 41 to lead the

Costa Mesa High boys golf team to a 232-237 Golden West League win

over visiting Orange Tuesday at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Robert Angle shot 43, while Troy Wright (48), Stephen Wright (48)

and Garrick Vohs (50) carded scores for the Mustangs (6-9), winners

of three of their last four matches.

UCLA tops UCI

* BASEBALL: Brett McMillan hit a two-run home run in the bottom of

the sixth inning to break a tie and give the UCLA baseball team an

eventual 3-1 win over visiting UC Irvine Tuesday in nonconference

action.

Mark Wagner was 1 for 3 hitting for UCI with one RBI, while Ollie

Linton was 2 for 5 and Tim Wojcik was 2 for 4. Reliever Bryan

Petersen tossed 2 2/3 innings for the Anteaters (21-17) allowing one hit and no runs, and closer Nash Robertson earned the last out for

UCI with a strikeout.

UCLA (9-28), under former UCI head coach John Savage, garnered

just its ninth win of the season.

Warriors stifle Tars

* SOFTBALL: Krista Seeman pitched a complete-game one-hitter for

host Woodbridge High as the Warriors defeated Newport Harbor, 2-0, in

a Sea View League softball game.

Seeman struck out eight batters and Newport’s Ashley Gleason

struck out seven in the pitcher’s duel.

Tartans trump Sage Hill

* GOLF: Josh Chen shot 3-over-par 39 to lead the Sage Hill School

boys golf team, which fell, 193-229, to visiting St. Margaret’s

Tuesday at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine.

Geoffrey Grant (46), Rory Foubister (48), Ryan Babbush (47) and

John Neff (49) all scored for the Lightning (8-5, 6-3 in league).
