Record-breaking day

The story regarding Edison High track and field standout Tori Pena,

is beginning to sound like a broken record.

As in, broken record here, broken record there.

The junior was at it again at Saturday’s Orange County

Championships at Trabuco Hills High, where she shattered the school

record in the pole vault by clearing 12-foot-6 on her second attempt.

She finished second in the meet standings.

That vault bested the previous school mark of 12-3, set last month

by Pena during a meet at Huntington Beach High.

“I felt pretty good before the meet and am definitely excited

about setting the record again,” said Pena, who also ran a leg on

Edison’s 400-meter relay team.

Pena also does the long jump and high jump during the regular

season, but did not compete in either at Saturday’s countywide meet.

She said she’d like to break the school record again.

“I can do it,” she said. “There are a few things I need to do with

my vault in order to put it all together, but if I work hard, I can

do it.”

In a close boys’ 1,600 race, Edison’s Joe Gatel finished second to

Scott Smith of Dana Hills at the Orange County Championships. Gatel

finished the race in 4:14.06.

In baseball, Edison knocked Esperanza out of sole possession of

first place in the Sunset League by edging the visiting Aztecs, 3-2.

Sophomore Justin DeMarco and senior Garrett DeGrazio picked up

RBIs for the Chargers, and Thomas Marcin went the distance to pick up

the victory.

The win allowed Edison to avenge an 8-2 loss at Esperanza two days

prior.

Marina moved into a three-way tie for the Sunset lead by whipping

visiting Fountain Valley, 10-3.

Patrick Murray hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs,

Chris Torres had three RBIs, Torion Rayford drove in a run and Billy

Nowlin doubled for the Vikings.

It was the second Marina win over Fountain Valley in three days,

as the Vikings earlier upended the host Barons, 5-1. Jimmy Cooper got

the win, his fifth of the season without a loss.

Also tied for the Sunset’s top spot is Los Alamitos, which

defeated visiting Huntington Beach, 4-1.

Tony Katreeb hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, one of just

two hits the Oilers got off the Griffins’ Jason Schnitzer. Two days

prior, Los Alamitos blanked Huntington, 7-0, behind a perfect game by

Danny Farris.

In Golden West League action, Ocean View blanked host Estancia,

4-0, as Alex Burnett and Joe Roth combined on a one-hitter.

Burnett struck out four, didn’t allow a walk and gave up only one

hit in four innings. Roth threw the last three innings and struck out

the first eight batters he faced, before walking the ninth batter.

Roth then struck out the final batter he faced.

“Offensively, it was not a thing of beauty, but with this

pitching, we did not need a whole lot of runs,” Ocean View coach

Aaron Kavanagh said.

James Kang was three-for-four with two stolen bases, Matt Hughes

drove in the first run on a double-play grounder in the fourth

inning, Geoff Klein doubled in a run in the sixth inning, and Derek

Martin and Jason Walker each drove in a run in the seventh.

In softball, Brooke Thompson, who led off the inning with a

single, beat out a throw at home plate in the bottom of the 18th

inning as host Marina edged Esperanza, 1-0, in Sunset League play.

Thompson scored on an infield grounder by Katie Jordan.

Marina pitching star Krystal Heinle put on a terrific performance

by throwing all 18 innings.

In another league game, Fountain Valley defeated visiting

Huntington, 5-2. Fiona Fiaseu and Kara Rutkin each doubled for the

Oilers.

In boys’ volleyball, Huntington and Edison stayed tied for first

place in the Sunset League by winning matches against Marina and

Fountain Valley, respectively.

The Oilers swept the Vikings, 25-17, 26-24, 25-23, and the

Chargers did the same to Fountain Valley, 25-17, 25-15, 28-26.

In boys’ diving, Esperanza defeated Huntington, 10-3; Los Alamitos

defeated Fountain Valley, 10-3; and Marina defeated Edison, 9-7, in

Sunset League competition at Marina High.

Locals who have qualified for the upcoming CIF diving meet are

J.P. Salgado of Edison and Brad Arthur and Eric Kartchner, both of

Marina.

In girls’ diving, Huntington beat Esperanza, 13-3; Los Alamitos

beat Fountain Valley, 9-7; and Marina beat Edison, 11-5, in

competition at Marina.

Marina’s Jaclyn Funke, Shayna Soloman and Megan Morse, Selby

Werner of Huntington and Jenn Lappe all have qualified for the

upcoming CIF diving meet.
