Estancia golfers win

The Estancia High boys golf team cruised to a 207-254 Golden West

League victory over Orange Thursday at El Prado Golf Course to finish

as league champions for the third straight season.

John Rausch shot 39 to earn medalist honors while Greg Les (40),

Ben Schramm (41), Pat Flannery (43) and Garrett McMasters (43) marked

scores for the Eagles (13-8, 8-0 in league), who haven’t lost in the

league since entering nearly three years ago.

Estancia will be taking eight players to the league individual

championships Monday and Tuesday at Los Serranos Golf & Country Club.

CdM gets title share

* TENNIS: The Corona del Mar High boys tennis team clinched at

least a share of the Pacific Coast League title with a 15-3 league

win at Tesoro Thursday.

CdM (16-1, 7-0 in league) can wrap up sole possession of first

with a victory Monday over second-place University.

Sea Kings freshman Fabian Mathews, playing No. 2 singles, earned

an impressive 6-0 singles verdict over highly regarded Nick Meister,

Tesoro’s No. 1 player, to highlight a strong showing from the

visitors, CdM Coach Tim Mang said.

6-0; Chou-Caughren (CdM) won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.

OCC women in first

* SWIMMING: The Orange Coast College women’s swim team is in first

place and the men in second after the first of three days of the

Orange Empire Conference championships at Saddleback College

Thursday.

The women have 188 points, while the men have 171 points behind

Golden West (203).

First-place finishers for OCC included Megan Rose, who won the

500-yard freestyle in 5:18.41, Kimberlee Frith in the 50 free (54.54)

and the women’s 400 medley relay team (4:10.14).

The women’s 200 free relay team took second with 1:42.17, while

Drew Crowell took second in the men’s 500 free with 4:49.46 and

Michael Fessenden finished second in the 50 free (21.07).

Sage finishes second

* TENNIS: Doubles partners Michael Garrison and Conrad Whitaker

recorded a Golden Set to lead the Sage Hill School boys tennis team

to a 16-2 Academy League victory Thursday at Fairmont Prep.

Garrison and Whitaker swept their sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1

doubles without losing a single point as Sage (12-7, 8-2 in league)

clinched second in league behind Whitney, the three-time defending

league champion.

Sailors stay on track

* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High’s boys volleyball team continued

its undefeated run in the Sea View League with a 25-19, 23-25, 25-7, 25-23 victory over visiting Irvine Thursday.

Outside hitters Brett Auer and Brett Perrine led the Sailors

(15-11, 8-0 in league) with 14 and 12 kills, respectively, while

Weston Dunlap (10), Parker Stevens (seven), Blake Newman (six), and

Kyle Caldwell (six) added to the hitting attack.

Auer tallied 10 digs and two service aces while Dunlap and Ted

Slater tallied four and three blocks, respectively.

Slater added 53 assists and Travis Duffield contributed five digs

for Newport, still in line for at least a share of the league title

with two Sea View matches remaining next week.

CdM fires season low

* GOLF: Corona del Mar High’s boys golf team shot its lowest score

of the year and handed visiting Tesoro its first Pacific Coast League

loss this season with a 193-203 decision Thursday at Newport Beach

Country Club.

Sophomore David Su shot 1-under 34 to earn medalist honors, while

Jamie Bloom (37), Zach Rabinovich (38), Matt Story (38) and Ben

Tilsen (40) scored for the Sea Kings, who bettered their previous low

by six strokes.

Pirates push through

* TENNIS: Orange Coast College sophomore Michelle Esquivel, the

defending state singles champion, was among several winners who

advanced at the Southern California women’s tennis regionals Thursday

at Cerritos College.

Esquivel, the No. 1 seed, defeated Tracy Kavanaugh of El Camino,

6-0, 6-0, in the second round.

OCC freshman Emily Paulson topped Yoko Anderson from San Diego

City, 6-3, 6-3, while OCC freshman Jessica Rice swept Natalie Tejada

from Ventura, 6-3, 6-1, to round out the OCC singles contingent.

Esquivel and Rice defeated a duo from College of the Desert, 6-2,

6-0, in second-round doubles play.

Paulson and sophomore Rachel Sessum were also victorious in

second-round doubles play, topping a twosome from Rio Hondo, 6-3,

6-3.

The round of 16 and quarterfinals are scheduled today, beginning

at 9 a.m.

Newport tops Warriors

* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High boys golf team edged visiting

Woodbridge, 193-203, in Sea View League play Thursday at Big Canyon

Country Club.

Senior Brandon Sowers shot a 1-under 35 to earn medalist honors

while Davis Pemstein (38), Justin Morehead (39), Paul Nes (40) and

Rhett Palmer (41) carded scores for the Sailors (12-8, 7-3 in

league). Sowers tallied two birdies and one bogey as Newport finished

league play in the top three spots to qualify for the CIF Southern

Section postseason.

Orange Coast rolls on

* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team continued to

tighten the Orange Empire Conference race as it remains one game

behind Santa Ana after an 8-6 conference victory over visiting Golden

West Thursday.

The Pirates scored five runs in the fifth inning with OCC’s Robbie

Blauer leading off with a double, Josh Banda hitting a single and

Stephen Cope hitting a two-run single.

Cope was 3 for 5 with four RBIs, Banda was 3 for 5 with one run,

while Cline, Blauer and Luke Beck each had two hits.

OCC (22-13-1, 13-5-1 in OEC) has two conference games remaining

against Santa Ana, including a tied game that will be finished

Thursday.

Sweet singles sweep

* TENNIS: Sophomore Jake Fleming, freshman John Hutchinson and

senior Dylan Espley-Jones all swept their singles sets to lead the

Newport Harbor High boys tennis team to an 11-7 Sea View League

victory over host Laguna Hills Thursday.

Newport (7-8, 6-5 in league) is currently tied for second with

Foothill in the league standings, behind first-place Woodbridge,

ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division I.

‘Eaters fall in opener

* WATER POLO: Aleah Amr’s four goals weren’t enough as the UC

Irvine women’s water polo team fell to Cal State Northridge, 10-9, in

a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Thursday at the Spieker

Aquatic Complex in Berkeley, Calif.

Jessica Lewis added two goals while sophomore goalkeeper Kelly

Woodbury made three saves for the Anteaters (13-16, 4-8 in the MPSF).

Chandy leads qualifiers

* TRACK AND FIELD: Sage Hill School junior Zach Chandy qualified

in four events at the Academy League track and field preliminaries

Thursday at Saddleback College to advance to the finals Thursday.

Chandy qualified in the 100-meter sprint, 200, 400 and 800 while

Chris Neale made the cut in the 100 and 200. Sage athletes Jimmy

O’Hare, Tyler Ellis, Michael Voge, Eric Good, Derrick Sun, Tim

Lefler, Chris Lee, Connor Rose and Andrew Winterman qualified in

their respective events.

Sage girls Kelsey Rose, Laura Gordon, Amy Werblin, Sara Montazami,

Rachael Blitzer, Megan McGillivray, Madison Gillis, Amelia Fletcher

and Erica Faris qualified in their respective events.

Sage collects forfeit

* GOLF: The Sage Hill School boys golf team earned a forfeit

victory when Academy League host could not field the required five

players Thursday.

Sage (9-5, 7-3 in league) finishes in a second-place tie with

Capistrano Valley Christian.
