Breakers fall to Sea Kings, Eagles

Facing a must-win situation in the race for a postseason playoff

berth, the Laguna Beach High School baseball team found the going

tough Tuesday at Corona del Mar.

The host Sea Kings scored an 8-1 victory, to keep their grip on

second-place in the Pacific Coast League standings.

Things started off well for Laguna, as four of the first five

Breakers batters reached base on four singles.

Jeff Bolar had the key hit, which scored Calvin Mead, who had

singled earlier in the inning.

It turned out to be a short-lived lead -- and Laguna’s only run.

Corona del Mar responded with three runs on three hits in their

first at-bat and was never threatened again.

The Sea Kings kept the pressure on offensively by scoring three

more runs in the third and one run in the fifth and sixth innings.

Sam Palfreyman paced Laguna with two hits.

In addition to Bolar and Mead, Ryan Landry and Kevin Kelly also

singled.

The two teams meet again today at Laguna to finish up the

three-game season series.

In an earlier Pacific Coast League game, Laguna suffered one of

its tougher losses of the year when it was defeated by Calvary

Chapel, 4-3, at TeWinkle Park in Costa Mesa.

It was the first win by the last-place Eagles in three meetings

this season against the Breakers.

Calvary Chapel came out swinging and finished with 10 hits in the

game.

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning, when Laguna was

finally able to score.

Kelly scored on a wild pitch to narrow the deficit to 3-1.

Laguna’s defense kept the game tight, and in the sixth inning, the

Breakers rallied with another run.

This time, Bolar lead off the inning with a single, and with one

out, Mike Selevan hit a line drive RBI single to get Laguna within a

run.

In the seventh inning, Laguna rallied for one more run to tie the

score, 3-3.

Noah Brewster was hit by a pitch and Kelly followed with a single

to put runners at the corners. Bolar was the hit by a pitch to load

the bases, then Rauch hit into a fielder’s choice to drive in

Brewster from third.

Calvary, however, had the final say in the bottom of the seventh

and scored the winning run on an RBI single.

Landry and Brewster also singled for Laguna.

Today’s home game against Corona del Mar is at 3:15 p.m., and

Laguna will play at Pacific Coast League leader Tesoro on Tuesday.
