Sculpture contest

The Laguna Beach Arts Commission will hold a sculpture competition

to add to the city’s public art collection.

The art will be located at the Village Green Park at the corner of

Monterey Street and Catalina Avenue.

The subject should be inspired by nature and should be figurative.

A vertical orientation is recommended. The piece must be no larger

than 5-feet-wide and a maximum of 7-feet-deep.

Only original artwork should be submitted. Honorarium is $10,000.

Museum hosts Celebration

The Laguna Art Museum will host a day of hands-on art activities,

musical entertainment and a treasure hunt with prizes for the 17th

annual Orange County Imagination Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday. This year’s theme is “Imagination Takes Flight.”

The event links artists and educators in an effort to recognize,

promote and present quality visual and performing arts programs for

children and parents.

The museum’s event, “Soar into Art,” will offer art projects

revolving around the concept of air and flight, including flying

carpets, mobiles, balloon animals, bug making, face painting, a mural

project and more.

The treasure hunt is designed to encourage children to take a

closer look at the art on exhibit at each of the museum galleries.

Flight-related prizes will be awarded.

The Laguna Beach Honors Choir will perform a medley of songs under

the direction of Beth Sand. Because of a donation from the Laguna

chapter of Soroptomists International, admission is free. The Laguna

‘Fresh Faces’ at

Festival of Arts

Festival of Arts is now exhibiting “Fresh Faces” at Wells Fargo

Bank -- an exhibit designed to give the public a sampling of some of

the new artists who will be exhibiting their work at the festival

this summer.

The festival completed its jurying process on March 26. This year,

20 artists will have the opportunity to exhibit their original work

for the first time. The exhibit runs through May 20 and features the

diverse works of Steve Bjorkman, Teri Kahan, Terrence Kennedy, Milano

Liberi, R. Mike Micklich, Linda Pirri, April Raber, Paul Renner,

Bradford J. Salamon, Russell Sasaki, Jennifer Tenace, Elaine Twiss

and Noriho Uriu.

This free exhibit is part of an ongoing series of shows that the

Festival of Arts is having at Wells Fargo, 260 Ocean Ave., this year.

The Sawdust Festival has an exhibit on the main floor of the

building, while Community Art Project has an exhibit on the second

level, showing the artwork of Laguna Outreach Community Arts artists.

Laguna Art Museum’s “Around the World ... a Taste of Travel and

Cuisine” spring benefit will be from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at the

Festival of Arts grounds, 650 Laguna Canyon Road, with proceeds to

support the museum’s exhibition and education programs.

The event will offer an evening of cuisine by chefs from many of

the area’s most prestigious coastal resorts, entertainment and a live

and silent auction of international travel and epicurean delights.

Tickets are $100 for Laguna Art Museum members and $125 for

nonmembers. For every two tickets purchased at the $125 level,

patrons will receive a family membership to the museum, a $75 value.

free art exhibitions and classical music concerts to the community

with its annual juried student art show and a performance by Robert

Estrin, a pianist who also plays the French horn, presented by Laguna

Debussy. The concert begins at 3 p.m. The final event this season is

‘The Best’ on display at Laguna College

“The Best of the Best of the Best” is Laguna College of Art &

Design’s annual juried art show with 75 pieces of original artwork

created by students at each level exhibiting works is drawing and

FOA’s ‘Imagination Celebration’ May 7

The Festival of Arts will host “Imagine It! Create It!”

Imagination Celebration event from noon to 3 p.m. May 7. The event is

dedicated to children and adults discovering their creativity through

a variety of artistic media.

Festival of Arts artists and staff will host free hands-on

workshops -- printmaking with Anne England; wire sculpture with Susan

Cox; sidewalk chalk art with Patrick Kelly; miniature stained-glass

windows with Lynn Welker; handmade dolls with Shelly Rapp Evans; and

jewelry making with Pam Peterson.

Several world-famous Pageant of the Masters stage sets from

previous shows will be on display and there will be entertainment.

“Imagine It! Create It!” will be at the Festival of Arts Irvine

‘Lagunatics’ auditions May 7

Auditions for the 13th annual “Lagunatics” are being held from 3

to 6 p.m. May 7 at the No Square Rehearsal Studios 1863 S. Coast

Highway. “Lagunatics 2005 Senior Prom” will be a benefit for the

Senior Center Building Fund this year.

Singers, dancers and personalities 16 and older are welcome to

apply. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. Bring in

a two-minute accompaniment of a favorite song.

Schedule conflicts that fall between June 2 and July 31 will be

reviewed. Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled 6 to 10 p.m. Monday

through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. No one

rehearses more than five times a week or longer than four hours at a

time. Cast must be available for all calls beginning July 23.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. July 29, 2 and 8 p.m. July 30 and 7

Arts Commission, City Council to meet

The Arts Commission will meet with the City Council at 11 a.m.

Artists to host

open studio night

Laguna Canyon Artists will host an Open Studio Night and silent

auction 4 to 10 p.m. May 14, exhibiting a collection of diverse and

eclectic artwork, with more than 25 award-winning artists

participating.

Proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to Laguna College

of Art & Design’s student scholarship fund. Preview of auction pieces

will be on display at individual studios for ongoing bidding from 4

to 7 p.m.

The event will have live music, performance art, refreshments and

the chance to win a Laguna Canyon Artists $75 gift certificate

Art and sea program scheduled for May

Laguna Outreach for Community Arts will offer, “Art and Sea

Adventures: The Art of Tide-Pooling,” in collaboration with the Ocean

Laguna Foundation.

The program includes a morning of tide pool exploration with Ocean

Laguna Foundation docents followed by a hands-on watercolor journal

art workshop taught by Laguna Outreach for Community Arts resource

artists.

There also will be a watercolor journal, art supplies, postcards,

tote bag, refreshments and more, courtesy of Montage Resort and Spa.

‘Rhapsody in Blue’ to be performed May 14

George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” will be featured in a concert

of classical, popular and ethnic music at 7:30 p.m. May 14.

Concert pianist Jeffrey Briar will perform the Gershwin classic,

along with works by Mozart, Chopin and Scott Joplin. Linda Frank will

play original improvisations on the Celtic “Faerie Harp,” and soprano

Christina Linhardt will interpret songs of Beethoven, Lerner and

Lowe, and Gilbert and Sullivan at the Unitarian Universalist

Comedian leads comedy workshop

Standup comic, producer and talent booker Lynn Epstein will be

teaching a comedy writing and performance workshop from 10 a.m. to 1
